Um, Jeanne? That info is available

* I just don’t understand some folks…

I am deeply concerned that our Governor and Democrats in Springfield are bungling our state response to COVID-19. The most important thing that we seem to be lacking is regular and accurate updates about the number of cases we are dealing with and this needs to be fixed now! pic.twitter.com/msg3iVydOR

— Jeanne Ives (@JeanneIves) April 8, 2020

Whether or not the administration is bungling its response is beside the point. If she wants regular updates about case numbers, then she should just click here.

IDPH updates testing, case numbers and deaths every day. You can see case and death results by county, race and gender. There’s even a Zip Code lookup for cases and a timeline graph that displays tests, cases and deaths.

  1. Umm, Ms. Ives, the Governor has a press conference every single day giving us those numbers. And there is a whole state website dedicated to the coronavirus that also publishes those numbers every day.

Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:11 pm

  2. Wait until she finds out about Trump and the federal response. Then she’s going to really concerned.

  3. Desperate for relevancy

Comment by High Socks Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:13 pm

  4. ==Desperate for relevancy==

With that sort of a tweet? Only if she is hoping for relevance as an idiot.

Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:14 pm

  5. The numbers being reported are not accurate. At least locally there is serious lag time and due to very limited testing and testing facilities no one can provide a direct answer on whether tests are reported in county of residence or county of test.

Basically they are still not testing anyone unless you have a prior history that places you into an at risk category to the real numbers are all over the place.

I will add that I am not a JB fan, but I am not saying this is a competence issue. Its just facts based on available resources.

Comment by the Patriot Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:15 pm

  6. Wait till she has to explain the federal response as “good” to get POTUS’ endorsement, as those numbers might disagree with that.

It’s on brand for Ives to ask for something readily available, lazy to looking is her thing.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:17 pm

  7. This post makes no sense. It’s not out of date. It just makes no sense. They’ve been releasing these numbers daily. I don’t know what she’s trying to prove with a tweet like this other than showing how deeply out of touch she is.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:17 pm

  8. GOP Tenet: Never let the facts stop you from lying about your political opponent.

Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:18 pm

  9. What she wants is updates on the “recovery number” so that she and the Trumpers can keep spinning that this isn’t really a big deal and that we should sacrifice thousands of people for a strong economy. This crisis has definitely laid bare the true nature of people…not that we needed to look too far for that with Jeanne Ives.

Comment by NIU Grad Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:19 pm

  10. ===updates on the “recovery number”===

    1) She should say that, then.

    2) Getting recovery numbers ain’t exactly easy. It’s not like people call their doc when they feel better.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:21 pm

  11. showing how deeply out of touch she is.

    It isn’t in Bizarro World.

    That’s where Jeanne Lives.

In Bizarro World, Jeanne sense make perfect.

The question is will it translate into more than 30% of the upcoming vote?

Comment by Morty Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:21 pm

  12. Exactly. I’m not defending it, but that’s what I’m seeing people spin in conservative circles. That will likely be part of their post-COVID narrative.

Comment by NIU Grad Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:22 pm

  13. ===It just makes no sense===

Except as part of a coordinated strategy to discredit Illinois’ response and confuse voters who might otherwise realize that it’s the White House that is bungling the response.

It’s a time-tested tactic: take your side’s biggest weakness/vulnerability and project it on your opponent.

    Comment by 47th Ward Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:23 pm

  14. —Basically they are still not testing anyone unless you have a prior history that places you into an at risk category to the real numbers are all over the place

True, but that’s true of every state. The releases in Illinois have made available the best data they have by all I have seen which is the best we can ask for.

Comment by ArchPundit Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:23 pm

  15. If she has specific numbers she wants, she could identify those. I think the burn rate on supplies is the biggest piece that was missing and the Governor has started to provide those, but the transparency has been very good.

As Rich mentions, unless you have a death report in three weeks, that’s likely a recovery. While it would be nice to track, the reality is it’s hard to collect and only as good as the testing which is limited.

Comment by ArchPundit Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:26 pm

  16. === Zip Code ===

    Woefully lacking.

  18. Does anyone have plans to start testing random samples of the whole population? It seems like the most direct route to a better understanding of how coronavirus is moving through the country.

Comment by Michael Feltes Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:29 pm

  19. Maybe it is my tinfoil hat, but I have come around to the belief that the lack of tests wasn’t a bug but a feature. Trump wants the number low, helps to have fewer tests. Maybe that’s just paranoid.

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:30 pm

  20. Someone should send her the information in coloring book format./s

Comment by Jocko Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:34 pm

  21. Numbers tested minus numbers died equals number recovered. If not tested and still recovered you won’t get to that number until all citizens are tested for antibodies. Data collection on this issue will continue for years. I agree with JS Mill that testing was intentionally limited. Thank goodness our governor does not agree and setting up own testing resources.

Comment by illinifan Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:39 pm

  22. ===start testing random samples of the whole population?===

Have you been in a coma or something? There isn’t enough capacity to test the sick.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:40 pm

  23. ===Does anyone have plans to start testing random samples of the whole population?

I think it’s less random and focusing on those who likely had it but haven’t been officially diagnosed so we can know who is immune and then the people who are close to those who were diagnosed. That way you can then also start contact tracing.

Comment by ArchPundit Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:43 pm

  24. I wonder how she feels about our President and the Federal response?

Comment by Howard Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:43 pm

  25. ==Wait till she has to explain the federal response as “good” to get POTUS’ endorsement==

No, “Perfect. Not as perfect as the president’s perfect phone call or his perfect letter, but pretty close.” “Great” may also be acceptable. “Good” will be seen as insufficient, perhaps even an expression of doubt, which will be unacceptable and may result in an angry tweetstorm at “Failing Jeanne.” Maybe “Loser Jeanne”? Just a guess.

    Respect.

Comment by John Deere Green Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:43 pm

  26. ===There isn’t enough capacity to test the sick.

I was assuming this point, and I’m baffled at how we get out of this until a vaccine is available given the testing seems to be so slow in expanding.

  27. Ives is taking a page out of Trump’s Birther playbook and her audience here is her base.

    Claim cover-up.

    Demand evidence.

    Refute evidence.

    Repeat.

Many folks shook their heads sideways in disbelief when they read Ives’ post.

Other folks shook their heads up and down in agreement.

  28. Who cares? She brings nothing to the table to help. Period, except craze. We have enough of that in the Whitehouse

Comment by truthteller Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:48 pm

  29. The Ives approach has always been to start with a conclusion and then create the facts to support it. Why would she change in the face of a pandemic?

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:49 pm

  30. Oh yes, legislative hearings and grandstanding are the answer to a pandemic.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:50 pm

  32. === I’m baffled at how we get out of this until a vaccine===

We stay at home so that only a couple of hundred thousand of our friends, neighbors, community members, and fellow countrywomen die of COVID-19 related illness or complications instead of one or two million.

That’s the reality we’re in. That’s the reality that was imposed upon us by the Trump Administration. As OW likes to say, elections have consequences. This is our consequence. I hope we only need learn this lesson once.

Comment by Candy Dogood Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:53 pm

  33. ==Other folks shook their heads up and down in agreement.==

Just look at some of the responses to her tweet.

You got one guy putting a #coronahoax

You got another claiming Democrat Governors are dragging this out

I feel like I lost brain cells reading the drivel on her tweet.

Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 12:54 pm

  34. == Does anyone have plans to start testing random samples of the whole population? ==

My belief is yes, there are plans for very widespread testing, but not any time soon because there are far too few tests available.

Until almost everyone can be tested, relaxing “shelter in place” will be by trial and error, relax the rules but be ready to reinstate quickly if cases start going up again.

The antibody test is the key missing piece because then we can identify people who had it and recovered.

    ===

On the post, “Scott Cross for President” gets it right:

Claim cover-up. Demand evidence. Refute evidence. Repeat.

    Comment by Hamlet's Ghost Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:01 pm

  35. === I’m baffled at how we get out of this until a vaccine===

I am hopeful transfusions of blood serum with useful antibodies donated by recovered COVID patients will be effective. I am hopeful - but skeptical - about the malaria drug.

But the potential for antibody transfusion gives me hope.

    Comment by Hamlet's Ghost Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:04 pm

  36. The reports I see appear to indicate a test for the antibodies is easier to make in mass quantities. That is the way out of this. Test the folks to see if they have antibodies indicating they may have had a mild prognosis or were a symptomatic. The data can be used to begin to lift the stay at home order. We can still have vulnerable populations stay home. But even with this test we are weeks away if not a month away from the bottom of this.

  37. Norseman nails it. It’s unfortunately the norm now, not the exception.

  38. Cadillac said, :

    === Zip Code ===

    “Woefully lacking.”

If I’m not mistaken, when the numbers are discussed and should also been mentioned elsewhere, is that if you have less than say five (5) cases in a particular zip code, then it is aggregated because of confidentiality concerns.

See (https://www.dph.illinois.gov/covid19/covid19-statistics): Data shown is >5 cases per zip code which is consistent with Collection, Disclosure, and Confidentiality of Health Statistics (77 Ill. Adm. Code 1005).

  39. Can’t believe the Commando is missing an episode of JBTV. Certainly Proft and SingleMom could have her over
It certainly seems appropriate to add her to the WhackAttack team of Chopper Jim and Curran

Comment by Annonin Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:27 pm

  40. Candy. You throw death numbers around like Trump and Faucci. CNN just an hour ago, revised those numbers down. Not a good thing by any means, but throwing out those numbers dont make it any better.

Comment by Blue Dog Dem Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:27 pm

  41. === I’m baffled at how we get out of this until a vaccine=== I don’t think there is a way out. We can’t control the Flu and this spreads easier that the Flu. I don’t understand the magic of testing . That just tells us the population that has had this.So only those people can go to work ? I think we have a rough idea of how many that is. We know the number who have died, 14,183. I’m reading more and more that the death rate is 1%. That gives us an infected population of 1,417,300. I think that is in the ballpark. So what do we do with that info ? That’s not enough to run the country and how can we discriminate against uninfected people ? I think we gradually reopen but wont return to normal. I plan on taking precautions until I get the shot so I wont be doing my part in the V shaped recovery… I figured Jeanne and the IPI people have been celebrating. The crisis that may push us into bankruptcy is here and it kills retirees. Santa Claus came early for them.

Comment by Anotheretiree Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:29 pm

  42. Everything else aside, I wonder if Candidate Ives properly compensated the photographer that took that shot of the Capitol for its use in a political tweet, unless - unlikely - someone on her staff took the photo themselves?

Comment by Osborne Smith III Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:38 pm

  43. === The crisis that may push us into bankruptcy is here===

    States can NOT declare bankruptcy.

This is Facebook “stuff” that perpetuates a cycle of ridiculousness.

We are in very dire (and that’s being gracious) straits. This state and many other states are going to be in such uncharted territory, I dunno what is exactly next.

My own concern, living. Living for me, family, friends, society… Life.

Ms. Ives isn’t talented enough to lead.

    - Scott Cross for President - is all over the situation, perfectly.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:40 pm

  44. Not only is the detail public, Ives focuses on the least useful information, number of cases. The two key evidence to assess spread are hospitalizations and deaths (which lag).

Comment by Simply anon Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:45 pm

  45. One issue is there are not enough tests to see if people died from Covid-19 or another cause resulting in under counting the deaths. I saw an article with a coroner saying she didn’t feel comfortable putting the cause of death as Covid-19 unless she could test or was otherwise confident it was the cause.

Comment by City Guy Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 1:47 pm

  46. – I feel like I lost brain cells reading the drivel on her tweet. –

Careful. Your brain is fine. It’s an effect of gaslighting.

  47. The magic of testing, in fantasy land where tests are readily available, is that it helps you find and isolate people who have the virus but are not showing symptoms, so you can isolate them.

Comment by SAP Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 2:29 pm

  48. You know I don’t know her personally and am sometimes reluctant to criticize people that I don’t know, but she doesn’t seem very smart.

Comment by Paddyrollingstone Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 2:40 pm

  49. 384. That is the number of samples (tests) required to determine the proportion of a population that has a defined condition, e.g covid-19 at a 95% confidence level and +/- 5 confidence interval.

Comment by very old soil Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 2:44 pm

  50. Other states provide much more detail, often on a daily basis, about confirmed cases of COVID19, such as the number of hospitalizations, the percentage usage of ICU beds and ventilators, total capacity, etc. In that sense, Illinois is deficient on case information.

    Comment by 588-2300 Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 2:47 pm

  51. “find and isolate people who have the virus but are not showing symptoms, so you can isolate them.” Good point, but what we’re doing right now is just assuming we all have it and isolating accordingly.

Comment by Skeptic Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 2:53 pm

  52. ==States can NOT declare bankruptcy.== Sorry OW. I thought I had typed enough so took a shortcut..Here is a a correction … .push the State past the point of no return and bring up the concept of State Bankruptcy, which they have long dreamed as a way to renege on pension contracts.

Comment by Anotheretiree Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 3:05 pm

  53. Here’s the thing Rep. Ives should know.

Invoking Col. Jessup as in other threads, I have always thought that Reiner and Sorkin could have added a line to the film’s pivotal scene.

    Imagine this:

Col. Jessup: “…you need me on that wall.”

LTJG Kaffee: “No Colonel, I need someone better than you.”

That’s the ball game. I appreciate the service, I appreciate the desire, but I need someone to think critically, not partisanly.

  54. =Good point, but what we’re doing right now is just assuming we all have it and isolating accordingly.=

That’s exactly right. And we shouldn’t lose sight of that. We had an opportunity to get ahead of this in January and squandered it. And the person that is chiefly responsible for this takes no responsibility.

Comment by Shytown Wednesday, Apr 8, 20 @ 4:11 pm

  56. Keep in mind some of those stats cover up small outbreaks in zip codes because state law doesn’t allow them to report numbers less than five. This is happening even though the numbers are reported elsewhere. With all the restrictions on our civil liberties I would ask the governor to be ignore that law for the sake of transparency during this health emergency.
