Thursday, State Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield), many of his staff and Our Helping Hands volunteers helped pack and distribute food to their Will County community.
“Thank you to all that made this mobile food pantry happen,” Batinick wrote on his Facebook page. “We loaded up 144 cars with food.”

Drive-by parades are growing in popularity as the COVID-19 stay-at-home order continues.
On Wednesday, March 25, Wauconda Grade School fifth-grade teacher Tracie Miglans coordinated a parade with other teachers and staff. Miglans said more than 35 cars left the school’s parking lot, making their way through nearby neighborhoods with participants honking horns and waving.
Cars were decorated with signs, balloons, the school’s gecko mascot and streamers. Many current students and Wauconda residents waved back. Miglans said the parade lasted more than an hour and proved that teachers can stay connected with students while keeping with the social distancing guidelines.

I’ve heard people are trying to help locally:
Any town (Mayor’s office, Chamber of Commerce or local charity coordinate) can have individuals donate ($5, $10, $100 or whatever) to buy a meal for their local police and fire from a local restaurant.
Residents help, restaurants get business and 1st responders get food and thanks.
Could be expanded to health care, grocery store workers, etc.

I know a couple of very talented physicians in their 60s that are prepared to risk their lives and die to fulfill their oath.
I know a lot of other people who have been forced to put their lives at risk out of economic necessity.
What I’ve been asked to do so far pales in comparison.

One school district said the drive by parades violated the Gov order. Said it fell under “unnecessary traffic.”

Last weekend my neighborhood all chalked our driveways with fun messages and pictures. They were fun to look at while out walking the dog and getting some much needed fresh air.

Someone at the drive thru window asked how I was doing. I don’t know why that meant so much to me, but it did. We had a quick chat as there were cars behind me.

At the request of HSHS Illinois (including HSHS St. John’s Hospital and HSHS Medical Group), Memorial Health System, Springfield Clinic and SIU Medicine, Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach started this past Wed. accepting donations from the community related to COVID-19 supplies.
The donations can include boxed, unused surgical type masks (including N95 masks); clean handmade, sewn masks; unused, wrapped or boxed gowns and exam gloves; hand sanitizer; bleach wipes and alcohol wipes to help with the national shortage during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Individuals can drop off their donations at Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach located at 4930 LaVerna Road in Springfield. Collection will continue Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. until Friday, April 3rd. The community should be assured that these donations will be received in accordance with CDC guidelines.
Community members should only drop off donations at this designated location in Sangamon County, do not bring them to the hospitals or clinics. Please call (217) 525-8843 if you have any questions.

We’ve had a couple mini foodbanks pop up. Same concept as the mini libraries - people can leave food as they can and take food as they need.

I go out of my way to thank the grocery clerks for keeping the shelves stocked and the stores open. The general reaction has been a shocked look, then a broad grin. They are an overlooked group of the front lines of the crisis.

My husband and I are giving our tenants breaks or waivers on their rent. Some are now unemployed and underemployed. We all have to help each other get through this global crisis.
