17 Cook County detainees, five employees test positive, 31 awaiting results

Let’s just hope that ratio doesn’t hold up for the 31 who have pending test results. But hope, as they say, is not a plan.

* Meanwhile…

The Illinois Department of Corrections also is reporting two confirmed cases of COVID-19 among residents of the North Lawndale Adult Transition Center, a state-funded facility that provides housing and support for people recently released from prison.

“The facility has been placed on lockdown and all workplaces of the incarcerated individuals are being notified,” Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lindsey Hess said in an email.

Yes, so when are the public and authorities going to take note of this and release inmates. They WILL have to because this infection is uncontrollable and you don’t have to be an expert to know that.

What a mess. I defer to experts, but release anyone due to get out in the next 12 months. Of the remaining, release all non violent offenders requiring house arrest and count as time served as long as they stay out of trouble. Then put as much space between violent inmates who threaten public safety as possible in the prisons?

There’s absolutely no way we can justify keeping detainees and prison inmates locked up during this pandemic. The only humane thing is to open the jail and prisons and let the people free for the duration of this crisis. Once the crisis is behind us then they can return to jail or prison.

Anyone in there because they don’t have the cash for bail should have been released two weeks ago. Being too poor for bail usually means losing your job, messing up your life and maybe pleading guilty to a crime you didn’t commit. Now it could be a death sentence.

Get those folks out of there. And end cash bail.
