* I’ve chided Gov. Pritzker twice for the tone he’s used with President Trump. It’s not that I felt the governor was being counter-productive. It’s that two of our last three governors would regularly fly into public rages and I hated that. I also believed, and still do, that he needed to continue being Gov. Chillax during these frightening times. The facts are obviously on his side, so I wanted him to stick to the facts.
There are those, including within the Pritzker administration, who believe that President Trump respects those who challenge him. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but the POTUS did say this last night…

After a string of national TV appearances in which Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker criticized President Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic — and a couple of Twitter tirades — the White House on Monday has vowed to send Illinois 300 ventilators and 250,000 masks.
According to the governor’s office, that assurance came from a White House aide on Monday afternoon after Pritzker and Trump spoke directly on the phone at about noon. It also came some 24 hours after Pritzker complained “the only way to get the president of the United States to pay attention is to go on national television and make noise about it.”
So, maybe it did work. But the state needs far more than what’s been promised…

And the White House has made a whole lot of promises it hasn’t kept during the past several weeks.
Maybe our Republican delegation can finally stand up and say something?

Cook County Republican Chairman Sean Morrison lashed out Monday at Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot, accusing them of putting politics before constituents with their “volley of combative and sarcastic tweets” aimed at President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis.
“Finger-pointing and name calling by Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot solves absolutely nothing except for trying to score some cheap political points,” Morrison said in a statement. “We need steady, effective and focused leadership and they’re not providing it.”

I had several people that watched the Governor’s press conference announcing the new policies. To a person they turned off the TV when Mayor Lightfoot started her comments by attacking Washington.

Trump’s a bully. Standing up to him has been proven to be successful time and again.
Pritzker called him out on the one media that truly gets Trump’s attention, national TV.
If anyone, after three years of this administration, believes anything that comes out of Trump’s mouth, they’re a sucker for life.

Rich, I think you were right in the first place.
Trump’s mantra is, “Punch back twice as hard.” I don’t think the Guv. endeared himself to Trump by calling for his impeachment, lamblasting him publicly, etc.
I remember the first Governor’s luncheon that Pritzker attended at the White House shortly after Pritzker was sworn in. Trump made a rather neutral statement to the effect that he looked forward to working with him, but Pritzker shot back with a sharp partisan comment.
I don’t think any Illinois democrats helped the situation by pushing impeachment in January/February, and now complain that the administration did not respond to the virus at that time.
And remember, the impeachment trial took precedence over everything else, including considering any Corona virus related legislation. Everyone was focused on the trial, whether there would be witnesses, etc.
You were right to call out Pritzker when he growled on the Sunday news that Trump should have called for a nationwide shutdown. I’m sure every Governor wanted that, to take the heat off them for having to shut down their local economy.
I think the message from the feds that I see coming from their news conferences is that they are there to back up the states. The state effort must be primary. The fed effort is secondary. They’ve been consistent about that.

Yeah, it seems like JB contentious rhetoric has captured Trump’s attention, but Governor Cuomo has managed to accomplish the same with a much milder approach — constructive criticism and plenty of talk about wanting to partner with the White House. Both tactics seem to work. The question is what track does the public prefer to see their governor take? I think the latter.

Everybody’s human and this is frightening, so some or many are bound to fly off the handle. There’s the extenuating circumstance of a president who constantly attacks people.
But very glad Pritzker quickly reeled it in, and the president too, apparently. Agree that this problem is infinitely more important than any political squabble. Our health and lives depend on cooperation.

It’s been the most interesting examination of styles and governing, the trio of the President, Governor Pritzker, and Governor Cuomo.
“Some” might say I’m holding up Governor Cuomo more than Governor Pritzker, but as I’m watching these three interact and signal to each other in the ways each feel comfortable or might seem out of character, but each has mentioned the other two in very specific ways and pointedly towards trying to work to the betterment of this crisis.
How our governor has gone about his business has gotten the needed attention. Sometimes “out of character“ is the needed ingredient, but what’s been the calling card of both governors is that they’re showing honest, that’s the takeaway, the honest concern for the constituents and the country, and if it’s working for them both, hopefully Illinois and New York, and for the states too.

Two weeks ago, Trump was singing don’t worry, be happy. The GOP, in their slavish devotion, sang back up.
Any legislation proposed by Democrats would have been lambasted by this administration as another attempt to dethrone their king.
And Fox News would have been more than happy to spread the propaganda.

Working together works much better than antagonizing each other most of the time. The side benefit when public figures work together is that it calms the public. We need public calm right now. I hope JB continues to tone down the rhetoric. Even if he has to work hard to do it. Be the bigger man for the people of Illinois.

Trump is a sociopath. Anyone who has deat with their ilk knows that they will do whatever it takes to accomplish their obession. It is all that matters and one can only speculate what the obession is until it is out in the open. In fact they count on everyone around them to ignore, deny or normalize bizarre behaviors. Also those closest to the sociopath will do everything to protect and conceal the obessive behavior or face the wrath and cunning much like Michael Cohen.
We in Illinois will see little help from the WH. In fact there will be little help for the nation and no doubt WH denial will intensify.
Anyone who has lived through the destruction sociopaths inflict will tell you the same.

Honestly, Gov Cuomo has a brother with a nationally televised primetime TV show on CNN, a channel the President decries but can not tear himself away from. Gov Cuomo flexed that to get support from Trump. Gov Pritzker did the next best thing to having a brother whose employer is CNN: calling him out in the national media.

Trump only respects strength. JB has hotels AND real money. And he’s advocating strongly and must continue to do so. Cuomo has a massive problem in NY and he is currently advocating that they get help first because of that. JB has to keep advocating so we can keep our problem smaller. No sense being a shrinking violet in this situation.

Absolutely. Except the reason they’re doing it is to absolve themselves.
Go back and find me the examples of a hurricane and the Feds saying- “hey, we’re just here as backup, find your own MRE’s and hospital supplies”
How about those times when Iowa bailed out it’s own farming industry this summer?

They have been consistent on that and that’s why the Feds are failing. A virus doesn’t respect state borders and the states are only as protected as the weakest state link, which now might be West Virginia.
He’s going to blame the virus on China and he’s going to blame the response on states and their governors. That’s the way he operates. He said it himself - “I don’t take responsibility.”

Oy! Rod Blagojevich is making the rounds of talk radio and offering suggestions to Pritzker. He penned an op-ed last week.
One puzzle is the Illinois state income tax filing date. With the Feds pushing back the tax date to July, how many Illinoisans will file or request extensions? The IL-1040 requires a number of entries that match the Federal 1040 form.
This could be an exercise in the law of unintended consequences.

I didn’t have a problem with the Governors’ statements, I’ve paid attention over the last week or so. He’s made calls ( he’s said so), he’s sent letters, no answers. He resorted to twitter and call-outs on TV and he got responses. Both his and Gov Coumos’ conferences are concise and full of info. Meanwhile the Presidents’ are all about ‘not my fault, they said something bad about me, the old system was broken, hey the navy is sending ships, the states should take care of themselves, stock market, this off label drug should be implemented tomorrow … not my fault.
I see a lot of responsible adults leading states. I actually see a lot of responsible adults ( other than Rand Paul) risking their
health to try to get Aid bills passed. The President is acting like Rod Blagojevich hiding in the bathroom.

Most of the time Trump acts childish. Rare times he has acted presidential. I give home a B grade on this crisis. JB is not helping himself, with what I consider, public demeaning. Indeed. And just as interesting is the partisan tap-dancing as people try to mesh their existing partisan leanings and rhetoric with events of unprecedented complexity and scope. That goes for both left and right. Perhaps in such circumstances some sharp language is occasionally necessary to center attention on what really matters, which is saving human lives.

This “It’s the state’s job to handle this/Federal Government should take a back seat” is a pathetic argument. This is a national health pandemic, we need a national policy to effectively combat it. Having each state set it’s own policies to combat this with bare minimum federal guidelines leaves gaps that can be exploited by the virus. Take that debacle with Spring Breakers in Florida. How many of them were from Illinois? It kinda ruins the whole “stay at home” policy if we have potentially infected people coming back from State’s who won’t take this seriously as Illinois is. Furthermore, every country that has done a good job with this is due to it’s national government, they didn’t tell their subregions to handle it.
Honestly Trumps “state’s take a lead in this” seems more of an effort to insulate himself from any public backlash. We don’t have enough tests? State’s fault. Unpopular lockdown policy’s? State’s fault. Economic depression due to Coronaviruse? State’s fault. This theory of mine seems even stronger when you consider that when this ends Trump will probably try to claim credit for everything good for himself and maybe a couple of favorites.

A B? Really? The President has literally said that he bears no responsibility. He called the virus a hoax. He has a hunch that things will get better (when they clearly aren’t) and is now rethinking social distancing. That’s quite the scale you’re grading on.

The implication, from Trump’s tweet, is that he wasn’t going to help Illinois before the call. That is really problematic. He should be working on helping everyone, but he obviously is not. He is playing personal (not partisan) politics with a crisis. He is a sick person.
With regard to what Rich is talking about, I too prefer the chill governor who simply gets things done. I think it is the perfect contrast to the president.

Yes, you are correct. Much of what the President says is quite nuanced and I should have been clearer. We all know that his response has been “perfect” a “10 out of 10.”

Pritzker and Cuomo are trying to keep the people of their states and that has to be supported by the federal government. When you’re told one thing (everyone that needs a test can get one) and the reality is completely different you’re going to get upset. Add to it that the person delivering the message takes no responsibility and rates himself a 10 out of 10. Kind of hard to stay composed in the face of that.
Diplomacy hasn’t worked with Trump yet. What makes anyone believe that it will now?

Do you really think that businesses will just resume operations because Trump says so? The actions that have been taken so far by private businesses and states have been done in spite of anything that Trump has suggested.

The federal government taking a back seat to states in a national pandemic is the opposite of leadership. What do we have a national government for if it’s not going to take the lead in a national emergency?
When we had the Great Depression, the federal government took the lead. But we had FDR. Now we have a president who reminds of our former governor.

Nope. President Trump called the coronavirus the Democrats’ new hoax. At a rally at North Charleston South Carolina he “And this (the coronavirus) is their [Democrats] new hoax”

I remember you saying you wouldn’t/couldn’t leave Illinois because of a special needs family member.
But, if POTUS says to risk their lives for the economy, you jump at that chance.
When I think back now to you not being able to move, but now you are willing to risk your family for the economy.

Which is precisely why we need more tests. The reason that we’re staying at home right now is that you can’t separate the sick from the healthy. And even when tests are performed results are taking days to receive. South Korea can do this but we can’t seem to figure it out? You want people back to work, hold the President and federal government accountable.
Or continue to defend the many ways the President uses the word “hoax.”

Well Snopes is wrong. Here is a portion of the transcript.

The pronoun “this” refers to the coronavirus.
The way pronouns work is they refer to the subject previously mentioned. That subject was the coronavirus. You can see it right there. You don’t have to take my word for it.
