Just our luck

* The NBA, NHL and MLS have all suspended their seasons. Major League Baseball just postponed the start of the season and the NCAA might possibly be pressured into canceling its upcoming tournament is canceling its tournament as well.

Which brings us to a nascent industry in Illinois that is about to get totally clobbered…

Three days after sports betting launched in Illinois, there is a stunning lack of sports to bet on. https://t.co/vLjgCIv4Tg

The state is counting on sports betting revenues to help fund its vertical infrastructure program.

  4. Maybe switch this year’s tournaments to an all-ESports format. Including the NCAAs. Broadcast the games like they were the real thing.

  5. I guess they can take bets on the election unless they cancel that, too.

  6. Not clear yet if sports betting is a displacement activity (people will just wait & spend their NCAA betting money after the interruption aka last year’s polar vortex for bars and restaurants) or lost activity like the 2020 tradeshow cancellations in Chicago…which is revenue gone for good in 2020.

But none of this is good, not at all, not for bars, and not for a City, State, and County with minimal rainy day funds.

  8. Can we bet on the dates the sports come back? The number of children born in 9 months from all the “ quality time” spent at home with no sports?

  9. Probably a dumb question, but what exactly does that mean for the projects in the vertical infrastructure program? No funding, no projects? Is there any level of prioritization to say if in the event of a X % funding reduction, these projects are scrapped first while we ensure these other projects are funded as best as possible?

  11. I hope the Governor’s Office is taking a close look at how to fast track sports betting once sporting events resume. The inability to bet online is going to cost the state tremendously. You can’t have only one location available in the state and make any money.

The “Membership” will need to choose if they want to risk health in and around their hallowed grounds.

If I were a betting sort (see what I did here?) I’d bet the “Membership” cancel.

    They don’t need the money.

Maybe Neil Bluhm can start a Go Fund Me page?

  17. No sympathy for Rivers certainly.

All that expected gambling tax revenue is now gone. So projects and everything that relied on that gaming tax money is now delayed or cancelled.
