Rate Dr. Chuck’s first campaign ad in CD15

Posted in:

* Press release…

Dr. Chuck Ellington (R-Camargo) released his first campaign ad in his bid to replace the retiring John Shimkus in the March Republican Primary. Dr. Chuck’s ad promotes that it takes real strength to overhaul Obamacare and support our farmers. Dr. Chuck will bring that real strength with him to Washington DC.

* It’s quite something

Ellington is one of four GOP candidates vying to replace Shimkus. According to his campaign website, he’s a “practicing family physician, licensed attorney, health policy expert, and assistant professor of Family and Community Medicine.”

He only had about $3,900 in his campaign account at the end of December, however.

* In other CD15 news…

E-PAC, the leadership committee of Rep. Elise Stefanik (NY-21), has officially endorsed conservative Republican Mary Miller, Candidate for Congress in the 15th District and named her a ‘Rising Star’ female candidate.

Stefanik posted the following statement on Twitter: “Mary Miller in Illinois 15 is a farmer, mother, grandmother, business manager, and teacher. She is running on conservative values of lowering taxes, supporting the 2nd Amendment, and pro-life issues.”

Rep. Stefanik and her leadership committee, E-PAC, are committed to helping strong Republican women get elected to Congress. Rep. Stefanik serves on the House Intelligence Committee, where she was one of President Trump’s strongest defenders and one of the House Democrats’ sharpest critics during the sham impeachment trial.

“It is an honor to be endorsed as one of E-PAC’s 2020 “Rising Star” Republican women. I am humbled to have the support of Rep. Elise Stefanik in this race,” Miller said. “Anyone who watched the impeachment trial saw how effective she was in defending our president. She is fearless and she continues to lead the charge to elect more Republican women to Congress. I look forward to joining her!”

  1. I have an 18 year old who would totally fall for the tire flipping, weight dropping stuff.

Comment by NotMe Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 10:44 am

  2. He should focus on his medical practice. We have enough politicians, rural Illinois needs more doctors. Sending him to Washington would be a net negative for that district.

  3. SMH…I’ll give it a gentleman’s D.

No real thought given to the script. Good for him - he’s a weight lifter and tire flipper who has apparently signed on to the Trump Doctrine with no real thoughts of his own.

Come on, man! Let us know how you’re going to represent us…if you want to replace the Affordable Care Act, at least give us a hint on what you’re replacement proposal is.

That would be a good start; we can discuss the other issues later. But hit delete on this spot and get someone to do a quality introductory spot for you.

  4. Oh…and your sign, “Dr. Chuck for Congress”? If you want to be take seriously, get some serious signs. The ballot doesn’t say Dr. Chuck, it has your full name.

Comment by Commonsense in Illinois Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 10:59 am

  5. Yawn. Sid Yates ran basically the same ad in 1994.

Comment by Sammiches Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:00 am

  6. The Dr. Chuck, Mayor Pete shorthand descriptors seem like a current political thing.

Comment by Responsa Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:04 am

  7. Trumpkins love simple-minded strong men who, when they can impress with knowledge or compassion, they choose “muscles” and “strength”, no matter how silly or ignorant a smart man is.

It’s an “A-“… if you’re a Trumpkin, it checks all the boxes.

    Adoration of Trump
Showing phony strength in brute ways
Mention God First and always as a motivator
    Hate on Obamacare
    Say agriculture like it’s sacred

It’s so phony it’s… almost perfect

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:07 am

  8. Generous D-. Not only is the content of the ad difficult to take seriously, but the sound quality is very poor. Perhaps the ==about $3,900 in his campaign account== has something to do with that.

Comment by Can Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:08 am

  9. Agree the signs should have the last name on it. This guy is no Mayor Pete in terms of name recognition.

Grade C for the district. Lower elsewhere.

So far this race seems like a battle to out-Murica each other and make John Shimkus look like a statesman by comparison.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:12 am

  10. Wouldn’t it have been more effective to have raised the weights all the way over your head instead of dropping them with a crash at the end;)(some snark)

Anyhoo… it just reminded me of the Planet Fitness ads that are running on the radio right now that mock the tire flippin’ and hoorah power stuff. May play to a base of folks, but not to everyone.

  11. With respect to the ad itself, the double meaning “strength” visual it focuses on throughout makes it a technically good and highly personalized political ad. Voters will decide if that’s what they want or not but he will certainly be associated with this strength image in voters’ minds. Grade B+

Comment by Responsa Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:14 am

  12. There was zero diversity in that ad.

    Comment by #5 Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:15 am

  13. F-. What happened to the GOP?

    Comment by So_Ill Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:15 am

  14. For a GOP primary, it probably touches all of the bases…a facile projection of strength, Trump, low production quality. I’d give it a B+ for what it.

However, a 3 plate deadlift is not that impressive. Dr. Chuck needs to stop skipping leg days.

Comment by Red Raider Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:20 am

  15. === What happened to the GOP?===

It’s a cult. I, myself, graded on its “appeal” to those in this cult.

With $3,900, a low quality styling ad, simpleton appeal to the cult, it’s perfect.

As an effective tool to win, “move the needle” be something to build around in 4 weeks, no, it’s as terrible as it can be.

=== There was zero diversity in that ad===

    (Sigh) … (it’s a snark sigh, lol)

The boxes checked; old, angry, rural white.

All covered, to the cult’s glee.

Anytime, they know this, anytime the legislative leaders here in Illinois are ready to build, count me in.

This cult of personality and running as adoration for a man… yeah, this isn’t helping the party that needs to rise again.

  16. As usual, OW cuts through the smoke and mirrors like a laser.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:36 am

  17. Comments seem to miss the point, it has local appeal. know your market. Quality is lacking but still ranks a B

  18. Shades of Mike Gravel, but without the weird charm. D

@Streator - Technically, a laser would be awful at cutting through both smoke and mirrors.

  19. I wonder if Dr. Chuck accidentally (or intentionally) used his dating profile from farmersonly.com. /S

  21. To the ad-

    F for truth and sanity

Solid A for appealing to the Trump voter.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 11:53 am

  22. I’m guessing that ad could go over in the district, though if I lived there and if I agreed with the guy, the Dr. Chuck stuff and the poor sound quality would put me off.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 12:02 pm

  23. Don’t underestimate the Crossfit vote. Yes OW is right, this will appeal to a segment (perhaps a large segment of GOP voters), all he needed to do is remove one lift and add some target shooting.

Comment by OneMan Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 12:02 pm

  24. That weightlifting stuff sticks in your mind. Dr. Chuck. Mayor Pete. Amy. First names seem to be the in thing right about now.

If I were Oswego Willy, I would avoid the GOP is nothing more than a “cult” argument. Makes him sound like former Rep., former radio host, former Presidential Candidate Joe Walsh. Unless he wants to sound like Joe Walsh?

    Comment by Louis G Atsaves Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 12:08 pm

  25. - Louis G - Atsaves -

With true respect, appreciate that, but honestly what else can you call it?

Truth doesn’t matter, phony strength arguments, worship of a person, purity to the personality…

We can get into the Webster definition I guess, but clocks are right twice a day, Walsh is arguably looney as they come, but he may be right in his evaluation?

    - OneMan -

That CrossFit vote > Cross Over vote.

    These are indeed odd times.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 12:12 pm

  26. Oxford dictionary…

“ a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.

“a cult of personality surrounding the leaders”…”

    Dunno…

=== Luckily it’s cold outside and he won’t be wearing a t-shirt while knocking on doors because I’m not sure the reception he’d get.===

If I needed someone to show me the “where the beach is” flex…

=== Comments seem to miss the point===

I gave it an “A-“, i dunno if a party can sustain with its base turning into its “everyone”.

Romney was told his safety was in question if he went to CPAC. Not that he’d get booed, his safety.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 1:22 pm

  35. Considering how heavy he was benching, yeah, one would think he could deadlift more. A few thoughts came to mind.

    1. Too many tireflips might be killing his deadlift gains by exhausting primary movers.

    2. He should control the weight in the eccentric (lowering) phase of the exercise. Not focusing on that is killing his gains.

I like how he showed his strength in the ad. We need strong people, and it’s also true that the mind improves with physical fitness.

I am, however, curious what his stance is on tariffs, ex-im bank, and overall agricultural policy since he brought up the farmers.

Comment by Correcting Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 1:23 pm

  36. He is a MD and attorney with a message concentrating on feats of strength. Who needs wonky policy stuff when arm wrestling and Festivus events are what’s needed for DC these days.

Comment by zatoichi Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 1:29 pm

  37. How about an “F” for violating the Flag Code with the weight lifting/tire flipping top he’s wearing.

Comment by West Side the Best Side Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 1:52 pm

  38. ===It’s an “A-“… if you’re a Trumpkin, it checks all the boxes.===

I’ll give it a B for the same reasons as OW sites, but I want to round it up for a B+ since I hope this was done in house and cost next to nothing.

    I hope.

    ===Men with testosterone issues===

    Men with intravenous testosterone issues.

I for one do appreciate that he appears to be lifting with the largest volume weights he could find so everything looks more impressive on his bench press than it actually is.

Comment by Candy Dogood Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 2:05 pm

  39. His feats of strength are impressive, but can he kick field goals?

Comment by Independent Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 2:08 pm

  40. First act as Congressmen, repeal the band on sleeveless shirts on the House floor.

I rank it a C because sure, he doesn’t cite a single policy in his commercial but DID YOU SEE HIM FLIP THAT TIRE?!

  43. This ad would fit perfectly in the movie the Campaign, now if Dr. Chuck would just punch that iron jawed baby it would complete the circle.

Comment by Frank talks Tuesday, Feb 11, 20 @ 3:08 pm

  44. === I hope this was done in house and cost next to nothing.===

… yeah, charging someone got this “product” is almost as bad as what was finally produced.

    - Candy Dogood -, it has been a real treat reading your comments.

    - 47th Ward -, rarely has a reference to a fictional character on this blog been as perfectly played to its comedic end and it’s ironic meaning. Restaurant quality, I’m still laughing.
