Today, Marie Newman, Democratic candidate for Congress in Illinois’ 3rd District, announced her first television ad with a spot called “Learned” in her primary race against 15-year incumbent Dan Lipinski.
The ad tells the story of Marie’s roots in the district and the values she learned from her community that led her to become a successful small business owner and community activist (script is below). It also highlights some key differences with Dan Lipinski and echoes Marie’s belief that it’s time for a real Democrat to represent this district. The ad is part of an over half million dollar buy the Newman campaign has reserved.
Momentum continues to grow for the Newman campaign, with endorsements from the Illinois Federation of Teachers this week and 8 local elected officials and 4 key independent political organizations.

Meet Marie Newman. Born at Little Company of Mary, baptized at St. Barnabas, raised in Beverly and Palos. This community shaped Marie’s belief in hard work and equality. Marie scrubbed floors to pay for college and went without health insurance when she couldn’t afford it. But Marie became a successful small business owner and community leader. Now Marie is running for Congress to do what Dan Lipinski won’t: raise wages for working people and ensure health care is a right for everyone.

I found the ad disorienting with the collage of pictures that bombard the screen. I think it would have been stronger if it was easier to follow visually and concentrated on a single message.

And no abortion mention. Interesting.
Looks like she’s trying to establish some street cred outside of her west suburban base. Most the votes in that district are in the 19th Ward-Oak Lawn-Orland Park corridor, so that’s a smart strategy.

I’m curious to this note. While true, it’s interesting you point this out.
It’s a “C+“
It’s a bit busy, the music makes it more busy, needlessly, no LARGE name identification, relying on sound, when sound is “off” it’s far more difficult to decipher what the ad is about.
It is what it is, it’s out there, but lacking a good visual of her name, and far too busy to introduce her properly.
It’s an effort, not a great one.

Solid B and I am not predisposed to be a fan. Good idea to anchor herself to the area through local institutions, and despite the Catholic Church’s monolithic views on abortion actual parishioners are split in polling.

I liked the narrator’s voice (I often do not in political ads) but I did not feel this ad gave much in the way of substance in offering why I should actually vote for her. Where she was born and went to school is interesting I guess, but not really useful in separating her from her primary opponents in my opinion. Grade C.

It successfully tries to brand her as a “local,” when many perceive her to be an upper middle class outsider.
The ammunition against Lipinski is light.
As someone mentioned, Catholic is mentioned twice, yet without the abortion issue. The abortion issue is Newman’s main driving point for upseating Lipinski.
Finally, this advertisement sure looks like a pivot to the center, and hides her usual progressive credentials.

No one has noticed this is an introduction/Name ID ad in a district she’s already ran in? Are we suddenly grading on a curve that ignores all past elections? Come on now. B- at best. C in all reality. This isn’t something she should have to run. She should be wailing on Lipinski at this point.

For someone who has consistently chastised Lipinkski for voicing his Catholic Faith, she sure is opening the door for criticism for pandering. Doubt she’s been invited to the same number of Catholic Men’s clubs as Lipinski…not gonna fool many.

I was baptized at St. Barnabas now I mock the man who followed his Catholic faith, the same faith I want all you hometown folks to listen and believe I’m one of you on, and is Pro-Life. Just like the priest says at St. Barnabas.

It’s 2020 not 1920. Ladies have been voting for a whole century now and a big part of why there are a lot of folks in that district ready to ditch Lipinski is that he seems to have some funny ideas about women not having rights.

She said Lapinski was against raising wages and ensure healthcare is a right for all. How is that mocking? Lapinski voted against the Affordable Care Act. And the Affordable Care Act has caused abortions to go down. Not very Catholic of him.
The wage issue really isn’t true, Lapinski endorses the minimum wage to be $12 and tied to inflation instead of $15 an hour, but you really can’t say he “won’t raise wages for working people.”
I give the ad a C because most is true but some is false.
