John Cullerton has now officially resigned from the Illinois Senate

Posted in:

* Click here for the resignation letter. Sen. John Cullerton (D-Chicago) resigned the Senate Presidency yesterday just before the vote to elect Don Harmon as his successor. His resignation from the Senate today means there’s now an official vacancy and Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) can be appointed to the seat within the next 30 days (assuming all goes as planned).

Cullerton arrived in the Senate in 1991 after serving a dozen years in the House. I’ve already written and posted a lot about his retirement, but here are a few links to recent interviews…

* WTTW: An Exit Interview with Senate President John Cullerton: Cullerton points to child car seat and anti-smoking legislation as two of his proudest accomplishments. “Any time you can pass a law where you’re protecting health and saving lives, it’s very powerful,” he said. “Even if you start off with half a loaf, like on the seat belt laws, and you get tougher and tougher every year, people get more accepting. Some slow growth is better than nothing.”

* Tribune: Illinois Senate President John Cullerton talks about Blagojevich, bipartisanship and changes brought by social media as his time in Springfield comes to an end: He leaves, he said, as part of an agreement with his wife of 40 years, Pam, to spend more time in Chicago with his family and at his law practice. His departure, he said, is unrelated to a growing federal investigation of Springfield that has ensnared three current or former Senate Democrats, including two who had been in his leadership team, and another who’s a distant cousin.
