*** UPDATED x1 - Cullerton responds *** Pritzker wants Sandoval’s chairmanship yanked

Posted in:

* Your move, Mr. Senate President…

After being away from reporters for weeks due to broken leg, IL Gov Pritzker begins first presser back by calling for Sen Martin Sandoval (who’s offices have been raided) to step down as Senate Transportation Committee chairman, or for Senate Pres Cullerton to remove him

— Tony Arnold (@tonyjarnold) October 2, 2019

…Adding… The governor apparently told Cullerton this himself and not just blindside him with a media announcement…

Gov. Pritzker took questions today for the first time since Aug. 27. Pritzker said he has told Illinois Senate President John Cullerton that State Sen. Martin Sandoval should step down as chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, or be removed, amid a federal investigation.

*** UPDATE *** The answer is apparently “No”…

Senate President John Cullerton's office on Pritzker's request to kick Sandoval off the Transportation Committee: “This remains an active investigation, and the Senate President wants to make informed decisions.” https://t.co/dddqxhTmki

  1. I agree with the Governor on this. I don’t know what Cullerton is waiting for.

  2. The Senate President will do whatever he can to avoid conflict with people. So he’s going to avoid this for as long as possible. It will come down to his members pressuring him to do the right thing.

  3. ===come down to his members pressuring him===

This is very astute and probably right.

  4. Should Tom Cullerton be removed as the Chairman of the Veterans Committee?

    Comment by Matt P Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 1:56 pm

  5. Matt P-Yes.

  6. How about those IDOT folks?

  7. That’s a shot across the bow…

Interesting that JP isn’t afraid to pressure someone he will need. Or he assumes, probably correctly, that others will jump on the bandwagon now that JP pushed it.

  8. The caucus should first ask the members to voluntarily step down.

If both refuse, the caucus should ask Cullerton to remove them before, as a caucus, they ask the President… publicly.

  9. =Interesting that JP isn’t afraid to pressure someone he will need.= Or provide Cullerton with the cover to take action. Not that I think he needs any. Removing Sandoval as transportation chair is now inevitable. Every day this drags on is it becomes a further headache that Cullerton doesn’t need particularly with Pritzker publicly stating that it should be done.

  10. Good use of the bully pulpit, Gov. Pritzker must be listening to OW.

Comment by SpfdNewb Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 2:20 pm

  11. ===must be listening===

    You’re kind, but it’s #FakeNews

They are much brighter than to listen.

  12. It may make a difference in this case that few colleagues like Sandoval.

Comment by Boomerang Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 2:30 pm

  13. Not that it makes a difference, but since I’m in his district, I did email Senator Cullerton saying that he should remove Sandoval’s chairmanship. Good on Pritzker to pressure Cullerton on this.

Comment by Chicagonk Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 2:31 pm

  14. John Cullerton backed himself into a corner based on the way he handled the Tom Cullerton chairmanship shuffle. If he just stripped Sandoval of his chair, he could be criticized for playing favorites and treating a Latino senator different than a white one, who happens to be a distant relative.

The senate prez is in a tough spot here — with both his caucus and public opinion. Sandoval could do the right thing and “temporarily” give up the chair, but that would be very un-Martylike.

Comment by Phil Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 2:41 pm

  15. I like Tom Cullerton but they both need to be stripped of their chairmanships. It’s neither personal nor racial. It’s just the right thing at this point. If they’re both exonerated later, that’s a different question.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 3:04 pm

  16. == I don’t know what Cullerton is waiting for.==

Probably waiting to see him in person, from a comfortable and audibly difficult distance. No one’s wanted to talk to Marty on the phone or close to his lapel for a long time.

    Comment by A guy Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 3:36 pm

  17. cullerton is spineless, and honestly the public doesn’t know enough to care. Marty won’t get demoted until hes charged, and even then it might not be enough for Cullerton to do anything.

  18. @Oswego willy You are so right…

Thanks, but I feel - Conflict - has it first and best, I just played the hand out.

We’ll see what the caucus does now.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 4:04 pm

  20. This where he should be Raunerlike . He should say perhaps the Senate needs new leadership…..bet some members might jump at that.

    Comment by Not a Billionaire Wednesday, Oct 2, 19 @ 8:20 pm

  21. Where is the guy? On the run?? Senate Prez may not have even spoken to him
