  1. The road to Senator Sandoval’s house sure has a lot of sinkholes on it

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 2:13 pm

  2. I don’t have a great answer to the question, but I think more potholes should be measured in terms of what animal would fit inside them

Comment by Joey Twoshoes Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 2:16 pm

  3. Interstate 80 bridge over the Des Plaines River is a nightmare waiting to happen.

  4. ==The road to Senator Sandoval’s house sure has a lot of sinkholes on it==

Figuratively…maybe, but I bet that is literally one of the best roads in the state. Lead by example, ya know.

  5. My El stop is covered in pigeon poo.

  6. Springfield - 11th Street. Yes, the city totally redid the portion between Cook and S. Grand, but if it is ever to be the envisioned gateway from UIS to Downtown, the rest of it needs to be redone.

& perhaps if that happens, there just might be a Portillo’s on 11th near UIS. /s

  7. Higgins between Canfield and Oriole in Chicago. Locally referred to as the Ho Chi Minh trail

Comment by Drake Mallard Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 2:50 pm

  8. Gougar Road washout looks like a really bad job of installing the culvert.

Comment by very old soil Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 3:05 pm

  9. I think the list of roads and bridges that are fine is the shorter list.

I-39 between I-55 and I-80 is in pretty bad shape. They resurfaced a few miles south of El Paso (exit 15) this summer, but the rest of this summer’s work is just patch work - sections of concrete being removed and replaced and long cracks being ground out and filled with asphalt - those patches have a limited life. It needs a serious rebuild.

  10. There is about a 15 mile stretch of I-72 between Springfield and Champaign that is in ridiculously bad shape. I mean like ‘drive in the left hand lane so you don’t blow a tire’ bad shape. Also, parts of I-55 south outbound from Chicago have large crevices between each lane. Bikers need to be especially careful when changing lanes in this area, they’re wide enough for a motorcycle tire to drop right down into

I can name so many in the Springfield area, but I also nominate 6th Street (Business 55) between Stanford and I-55/72 in Southern View. And the 5th-6th corridor between Stanford and downtown Springfield. Pothole city there.

Also let’s widen 6th Street, Veterans, and I-55/72 around Springfield at least one more lane in each direction. And even Chatham can use a bypass around the west side of town (Route 4).

Comment by Leatherneck Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 3:23 pm

  12. Almost all of Chatham Road in Springfield / Leland Grove / Jerome. Hit one pothole so bad the rack and pinion in my 2015 Lincoln had a angle steering sensor error and had to be replaced under warranty.

  13. Rt. 24 between Peoria and Banner.

Rt 9 between Canton and Macomb

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 3:46 pm

  14. Every Metra overpass throughout the city terrifies me. Particularly the high use sections coming into the major stations near Kinzie and Clinton

Comment by Anon Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 3:46 pm

  15. I agree with Pot about I-39. I also think that the bridge over the Illinois at Henry is past due to be replaced.

    Comment by G'Kar Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 3:47 pm

  16. I honestly don’t have anything that hasn’t been touched in the last few years or this year. Ogden and Butterfield simultaneously this year sure was fun.

Send some money somewhere else for awhile.

Comment by SSL Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 4:00 pm

  17. What a concept, raise the gas tax so we can repair roads and bridges and get to work, home and businesses without wrecking our cars. Here’s hoping the fixes are in for all of the above roads/bridges.

Comment by Froganon Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 4:06 pm

  18. Four-lane 50

Comment by Southern Illinois Mayor Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 4:13 pm

  19. 8″ of rain in Joliet, we’re luck only Gougar Rd washed out.

Gotta agree with the I-80 Des Plaines River bridge…and if/when it gets shut down the traffic detours will be a nightmare.

Comment by Stu Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 4:15 pm

  20. I-72 from Argenta to Cisco, about 1 mile each side of the rest stop, has been in bad condition for years. The bridge at White Heath (I-72, exit 169) looks terrible, as does the Mattis Avenue bridge over I-55 just north of the interchange with I-74.

Comment by cover Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 4:46 pm

  21. Driving north on I57, there are some overpasses with visibly deteriorated concrete. I’m not sure whether they are just cosmetic or indicate serious structural decay, but that’s something I would want to see looked at.

  22. That bridge on IL 96 between Infidel and Hoot Owl Hallows.

Comment by Enemy of the State Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 4:49 pm

  23. I sure hope a polar bear in Peoria doesn’t fall in that sink hole.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 4:54 pm

  24. In all of the city of Chicago, because they don’t restripe the streets at all any more, you can’t tell where the lanes are, especially at night. I find this very dangerous.

Comment by 32nd Ward Roscoe Village Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 5:01 pm

  25. I know where there are plenty of used sandbags if anyone wants to fill any sinkhole. Come get all you want. Got enough to fill anything you need filled.

    Comment by SOIL M Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 5:53 pm

  26. Wouldn’t it be easier to list the good roads that don’t need work?

Comment by Bruce (no not him) Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 5:57 pm

  27. Four more reasons why the state needed a capital bill. If you knowingly built over a sinkhole you should be fired. But I am sure one knew they were there. So the smart money says close the roads. It will happen again. Karst topography is nothing to mess with.

Comment by Blue Dog Dem Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 7:41 pm

  28. ==Karst topography is nothing to mess with. ==

The sinkholes in these pictures are not in karst areas as far as I can tell. They more likely formed when broken water mais, storm sewers, or culverts washed out the soil and road bed under the pavement.

Comment by Pot calling kettle Tuesday, Oct 1, 19 @ 8:26 pm

  29. Jeff Park-Chicago
Just west of Central Ave, Bryn Mawr was paved a while back, but it’s new paved level is higher than both the alley and North Parkside’s paved level. Thus, during rain events street flooding occurs. Even when things are fixed (repaving), they’re messed up.

  30. Boughton Road bridge over I-355 in Bolingbrook. The expansion joints are out of whack and if you are waiting for the left turn to get onto 355, you can feel the bridge shaking as traffic goes over it headed east and westbound on Boughton. Instead, they are replacing the 83rd Street bridge over 355 in Woodridge, which I thought was perfectly fine. Boughton gets significantly more traffic than 83rd Street.
