Taking the long view

SHANE BOUVET, a Stonington man who volunteered on President DONALD TRUMP’s campaign, met Trump several times including the evening before the 2017 inauguration, and received $15,000 from Trump to help his ailing father, has taken to Facebook in what appeared to be an election challenge to U.S. Sen. DICK DURBIN, D-Illinois, of Springfield.

“Mr. Durbin Look me in the eyes,” it says in the post, titled “Bouvet vs. Durbin.” “It’s okay of you’re scared. So am I. … I know what is within me, Even if you can’t see it yet. … I have patience. I will become what I know I am. – Senator Shane Bouvet.”

So, I called Bouvet, who started work last week at a Decatur construction company, after losing a coal-mining job he said ended due to flooding in Hillsboro. He’s 27, he noted, and a person has to be 30 to serve in the Senate.

“I’m trying to let him know,” Bouvet said, “don’t get comfortable, because when I turn 30, he’s definitely in my sight.”

Assuming he wins next year, Sen. Durbin won’t be up for reelection again until 2026, when he will be 82 years old.

  4. I’m sure Sen. Durbin is quaking in his shoes at the thought of running against … checks notes … Who?™

  6. “I will become what I know I am. – Senator Shane Bouvet.”

Not in Illinois you won’t—if you’re like Trump—who ripped off university students to the tune of $25 million, had a reputation for stiffing contractors and prided himself on paying as little taxes as possible. Plenty of his supporters, bless their tax-hating hearts, don’t mind paying Trump’s share of taxes. But boy do they hate taxes when they help many who could use it, as opposed to giving breaks to the most privileged and wealthiest.

  9. He also put state rep Sue Sherer on notice. As a former coal miner, Shane doesn’t appear to hold Trump accountable for promises made to him.

It must be the fault of foreigners, immigrants, transgender adults, and eaters of tide pods.

  10. Putting Scherer or Durbin on notice is ridiculous.

Speaking of Sue Scherer…didn’t She vote against legalizing cannabis?

  11. Why do I feel like there’s a lot of meme potential in “I will become what I know I am…”??

  12. It’s a big world out there…

“Wasting” three years pining to be a candidate, if you can even qualify to get on the ballot… yikes, man.

Enjoy being 27. Saying things like this… you can think it… but saying it? Ok, but “youth is wasted on the wrong people”.

  13. Shane needs to give credit to Trump for writing his Facebook post. That has the stable genius written all over it.

  22. I certainly wont knock him for having goals of leadership, even as I’m sure I vehemently disagree with him on each and every policy point, but, “It’s okay of you’re scared. So am I. … I know what is within me, Even if you can’t see it yet” is suuuuuuper creepy.
