It needs to happen before the company reopens, and if that’s in the veto session, fine. The residents at risk deserve nothing less.

yes, because in this political climate, public promises made should be promises kept. Whether it passes is less important than that JB lives up to his pronouncements.

The Guv’s statement says Sterigenics can’t open until after the Veto session. If that is true, and the newly proposed bill can take effect before it reopens, then there is no reason to waste time or money on a special session. If those things are true.

I don’t think advocates want a speedy vote. They need time to analyse the bill, build consensus, and lobby Springfield.
I don’t think the lobbyists for Sterigenics want a speedy vote. They want to milk every last drop from this cow before sending it to slaughter.
I dont think the taxpayers want to pay for a veto session just to give Pritzker political props.
Delaying until veto seems like a win for everyone.

How does that go with…

My commenting on this in its entirety from the beginning revolves around one key thing;
All sides need to rally around, together, and force, together the best situation for Willowbrook, the victims, even the process.
Targeting a lone company or industry where compliance is probably more about safety then closing in the end.
The court cases and such may work on closing thstvplace as an aside.
So, to the question,
I’m fine with process here. The immediacy with the bill, now we can have a real discussion, to the bill, sure, and what it says, but there are realities to this, like educating the folks in the district, to looking at how the company has been a bad actor all through the process, jumping the narrative to probably help with the pending lawsuits filed or will be filed.
My whole point is getting the best outcome, and isolating the company as the bad actor, and everyone working towards a best case, then yeah, if it can hold, let it.
But, Durkin, the other sponsors, and including the governor’s office…
There needs to be an organizing time, together, not a waste of time to point fingers.
Tough to see an ending all will like or accept, but there is time for the side trying to have the best interests of Willowbrook and the victims to make clear all is being done, was done, continues to be done, especially against this bad neighbor abd actor.

NIMBYism at it’s worse. The new law set a standard. If the company can meet the standard and applicable EPA regs then let it operate. If it can’t then close it.

Durkin filed a brand new, first-reading House Bill. (HB3885)
Passing that bill in a special session would mean at least 5 special session days to meet constitutional requirements.
Three readings over three days in the House. Send it to the Senate for first reading in a perfunctory session the same day it passes the House. You still need two additional days for second and third reading in the Senate. That’s five days worth of special sessions if you want to pass HB3885.
And that assumes every duck is in a row and everyone’s cool with waiving all the posting notices for HB3885.

NO. Special sessions cost money. JB was wrong to say he’d call one. Now that Durkin took his sweet time drafting his bill, it’s close enough to Veto Session for JB to justify waiting to avoid the extra cost to the taxpayers.
Reading the description of Durkin’s bill, I’m amused by how he continues to want to have his cake and eat it too. His first bill set tough standards to be met. Now that the company has indicated it’s willing to meet more stringent standards infuriating his constituents, Durkin drafts another bill to have the locals stop it.

Call a special session. 1) People’s lives are at risk and asking the legislature to consider a measure to provide for their health and safety is the right move. 2) It’s good Springfield politics, this is something he said he would do and he should honor that.
