Question of the day

Posted in:

* Two of my brothers on Labor Day, 1971 at my family’s rural Iroquois County house…

We weren’t farmers, but my mom grew up on a farm and my parents had five sons and thought they could better keep an eye on all of us if we were living in the country. So, they rented a house a few miles from my maternal grandparents, who were farmers.

Every Labor Day, we’d decorate our bicycles and ride them in the Herscher parade. It was all great fun, from the decorating (my mom did most of the work, as I recall) to the riding. Herscher will host its 99th Labor Day parade on Monday.

* The Question: Your favorite Labor Day memories?

  4. Toluca, IL to watch the Labor Day Celebration and Bocce Ball tournament. We used to head down from Chicago so my dad could visit some old friends who relocated there. I always loved how they had the bocce tournament spread out all over town. There was great food and I got a kick out of the old 2-lane bowling alley they had. Also liked the “jumbos” from the old coal mines.

  7. I’m fairly certain the current crop of kids wouldn’t believe the number of miles on those bicycles.

  8. Labor Day Weekend, 1967: My folks had agreed to my getting a dog, and we had just adopted a very young border collie mix.

We took her with us up to my aunt and uncle’s in Kewanee for Hog Day.

I held her in my arms the whole time we were walking around.

For some reason known only to little girls, I tied one of my own hair ribbons (red) around her neck.

Best Labor Day weekend ever. I had a beautiful puppy.

  10. Walked the four blocks down to Liberty Street to watch the parade with my dad, back home to grill some burgers for supper, then sitting out at the picnic table and not wanting it to get dark and have summer be over.

  12. Sayitaintso: If I remember correctly, we always went to Mona’s. Great food! I just checked, and it looks like the bocce ball tourney is still going strong. I might have to drag my kids up there and relive some memories.
