Illinois Supreme Court Justice P. Scott Neville, Jr. on Thursday launched his campaign for a full 10-year term to the state’s highest court. The Committee, Citizens for P. Scott Neville, Jr. announced endorsements from over 50 elected officials, community leaders, and retired judges from a cross section of Cook County.
Justice Neville has served on the Illinois Supreme Court since 2018, when retiring Justice Charles Freeman selected him for the appointment to his seat. Justice Neville is the second African American, following Justice Freeman, to serve on the Supreme Court in its 200 year history, and he is the only African American or person of color on the Court today.
A native of Bronzeville on Chicago’s South Side, Justice Neville’s legal career has been defined by his tireless dedication to fairness and equality. His legal decisions have made him one of the most highly respected jurists on the bench in Illinois.
In addition to announcing key endorsements, below, the Committee on Thursday released a campaign video, “Trailblazer,” linked here, highlighting his lifelong commitment to equal justice for all.

Justice P. Scott Neville, Jr., the 117th justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, seeks election for a 10-year term on the State’s highest Court in the March 17, 2020 Democratic primary. Prior to his appointment to succeed retiring Justice Charles Freeman in 2018, Justice Neville served as an Illinois Appellate Court judge from 2004-2018 and Cook County Circuit Court judge from 1999-2004. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1974, he is a graduate of Culver Stockton College and Washington University School of Law and co-founder of the Alliance of Bar Associations.
His D-1 shows just $1,000 in the bank with no large contributions reported since the committee was formed in late April.

I don’t know him. But I happened to see him give a speech just last night to a Public Interest Law group.
The speech was wonderful - relevant to its audience, fact-filled, and passionate. He talked about what percentage of folks go without attorneys because they can’t afford it, and reminded lawyers of their obligation to do a certain number of hours of pro bono work.

Not even close to enough committeemen to get slated by the party. With all the candidates out there they might not make an endorsement. This will be an interesting one to watch.

Justice Neville is a great choice for the ILSC, and this is a very important race. I really want to know who the IPI, Koch brother’s candidate is, because I don’t want to let a lot of vote-splitting let that candidate get anywhere close to winning. So it’s very important to get behind a single candidate here, and to know who the enemy is.

There is also a young lawyer named Daniel Epstein running for the Supreme Court vacancy. He has only been a lawyer since 2015 and his main qualification is that his sister is married to former Alderman Ameya Pawar

A sign of the times. No endorsement from Ed Burke. That would have been unthinkable for an incumbent Justice in the past.

This race has the potential of spotlighting some of the problems identity politics may create for the Democratic Party in the 2020 election cycle.

Don’t think IPI/Koch Brothers have been involved in 1st District SC Democratic primary races before and don’t see why they would be now. There usually aren’t people running on political agendas in Cook County judicial races, which it as it should be. If there are no additions or subtractions from the current names, the judicial voting trends would seem to favor Justice Margaret Stanton McBride, although an SC race will have a higher profile than a countywide or subcircuit one. And, having know her for years, she is smart, knows the law, and is impartial.

JP Altgeld - Didn’t meant the comment for laugh material. Probably should have used capital P political. You will see people touting their connections to Alderman Smith or Committeeman Jones, but not, as judicial candidates before a Senate committee, their positions on Rowe v. Wae, unions, right to work, or worker’s comp, things IPI/Kochs would be interested in. Aside from the fact that the Illinois judicial canons prohibit that, those things are really not too relevant for someone beginning their legal career hearing red light/green light cases in traffic court. The fact that an unindicted alderperson thinks they’re okay is much more important.
