* Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady said at the City Club today that he believes the Republicans will find a “really good” candidate to run against US Sen. Dick Durbin.
Scott Holland has his own guess…
Will anyone emerge to challenge Durbin? I floated Kinzinger’s name in December, a possibility that remains in play.
I’ve previously expressed doubt about finding a Tier One candidate to run against Durbin. It’s a presidential election year and while Durbin has never been super-popular, he always racks up solid margins.

Erika Harold. She is a downstater, so could pull some of those votes from Durbin. She has some state-wide name recognition. And I think she received more votes than Bruce Rauner in the last election.

Grand, that’s actually the first name I’ve heard that actually makes sense.
I know she’s already in for a congressional run, but ILGOP would be wells served by recruiting former Lt. Gov. Sanguinetti for the Senate race. She has statewide experience and name-recognition, and she largely avoided the bad reputation associated with Rauner. Yeah, she could get tagged with it, but she could beat up on him with few negative consequences. Heck, he abandoned ship and moved out of state right after he lost.

David McSweeney. His ability to partially self-fund will be valued. Maybe evokes a touch of nostalgia amongst the base for Peter Fitzgerald.

They will find a sacrificial lamb to run out there to garner some name recognition for a future statewide run, but I have no idea who. It’s a losing battle, so why would Harold jump in only to suffer a second statewide defeat? Durbin wins this easily, retires a year later and passes the seat to Stratton.

How about Bob Dold (although he’d probably be better off waiting until 2022)? A true public servant and centrist who won in a Democrat leaning District as Rep. Also his work on the opioid crisis during his last stint in Congress is an underappreciated part of his resume.

Erika Harold is a two time election loser who almost certainly could not win the State Senate seat in the District where she currently lives (ironically a position she would likely view as beneath her).
At some point, don’t you have to WIN an election to be considered for higher office?

They should chat with Kirk Dillard. If he gets the actual backing revenue from DC, he’s a known commodity and he’s well liked.
May not be conservative enough for some in the party, from his days with Edgar, but he’d definitely make Durbin have to run a real campaign.

Erika Harold would be the best candidate to limit the damage in what will likely be a bad GOP year. But this is not your father’s Illinois GOP in which party elders get together and all but handpick the best candidate. Expect a Trumpian candidate to emerge from the primary.

And the top of the ticket won by 16 points in a wave election with depressed Republican turnout. I think for any Republican, it’ll be hard. It’s going to be even harder if the nominee doesn’t have statewide experience or at least name recognition outside a legislative district.

There is not one candidate mentioned that is worthy of support. Erika Harold? - no. Jeanne Ives? - no way. Who is Truax? Sanguinetti? The GOP needs to try harder. I vote none of the above.

I love the idea that people think a two-time loser is suddenly going to beat an incumbent who hasn’t lost an election in 37 years.

Innits best case scenario, the GOP doesn’t win this seat running to the right. Moderates who appeal to a broad electorate are the key to victory. Mark Kirk may have made Dan Proft’s head explode, but a suburban female saw him as the reasonable choice in 2010.

Found the guy who just got into IL politics.
Truax ran for the senate seat in 2014. Sanguinetti is the immediate past Lt. Governor, the first Hispanic American and Latina to hold that role). She’s currently running for the IL-6th.

Only a hardcore conservative will come out from GOP primary, and a cakewalk win for Durban in Nov 2020. Illinois GOP lacks moderates, as most states do now.

Peggy Hubbard is the best choice. A female African American Conservative. Navy vet, ex police officer with police officer husband who was shot on duty. Durbin won’t be able to use politics of division against her.
