Question of the day

Posted in:

* Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady said at the City Club today that he believes the Republicans will find a “really good” candidate to run against US Sen. Dick Durbin.

Scott Holland has his own guess

Will anyone emerge to challenge Durbin? I floated Kinzinger’s name in December, a possibility that remains in play.

I’ve previously expressed doubt about finding a Tier One candidate to run against Durbin. It’s a presidential election year and while Durbin has never been super-popular, he always racks up solid margins.

* The Question: Who do you think the Republicans will recruit to run against Sen. Durbin? Make sure to explain why you think this will happen.

    Not snark, just asking.

  3. Try Erika Harold again

Comment by Grand Avenue Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 1:10 pm

  4. Erika Harold. She is a downstater, so could pull some of those votes from Durbin. She has some state-wide name recognition. And I think she received more votes than Bruce Rauner in the last election.

  5. Why not try Doug Truax again

Comment by intentional snark Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 1:16 pm

  6. Grand, that’s actually the first name I’ve heard that actually makes sense.

I know she’s already in for a congressional run, but ILGOP would be wells served by recruiting former Lt. Gov. Sanguinetti for the Senate race. She has statewide experience and name-recognition, and she largely avoided the bad reputation associated with Rauner. Yeah, she could get tagged with it, but she could beat up on him with few negative consequences. Heck, he abandoned ship and moved out of state right after he lost.

Where did you come up with that?Sure they do. Just not women who are liberal. As a matter of fact Ives came close to beating Rauner.

And by the way She is a name that should be considered to run against Durbin.

  20. They will find a sacrificial lamb to run out there to garner some name recognition for a future statewide run, but I have no idea who. It’s a losing battle, so why would Harold jump in only to suffer a second statewide defeat? Durbin wins this easily, retires a year later and passes the seat to Stratton.

  26. How about Bob Dold (although he’d probably be better off waiting until 2022)? A true public servant and centrist who won in a Democrat leaning District as Rep. Also his work on the opioid crisis during his last stint in Congress is an underappreciated part of his resume.

Comment by AgedLikeMilk Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:02 pm

  29. Erika Harold is a two time election loser who almost certainly could not win the State Senate seat in the District where she currently lives (ironically a position she would likely view as beneath her).

At some point, don’t you have to WIN an election to be considered for higher office?

Comment by Dude Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:06 pm

  30. They should chat with Kirk Dillard. If he gets the actual backing revenue from DC, he’s a known commodity and he’s well liked.
May not be conservative enough for some in the party, from his days with Edgar, but he’d definitely make Durbin have to run a real campaign.

Comment by DuPage Bard Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:10 pm

  31. Remember with Erika, she got beat by 12 points statewide by Raoul in a non-presidential year.

Comment by DuPage Bard Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:16 pm

  32. Jim Edgar is the only one who probably can beat him can someone get him to run.

Comment by cler dcn Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:24 pm

  33. Erika Harold would be the best candidate to limit the damage in what will likely be a bad GOP year. But this is not your father’s Illinois GOP in which party elders get together and all but handpick the best candidate. Expect a Trumpian candidate to emerge from the primary.

Comment by Roman Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:24 pm

  34. ===she got beat by 12 points statewide by Raoul in a non-presidential year===

And the top of the ticket won by 16 points in a wave election with depressed Republican turnout. I think for any Republican, it’ll be hard. It’s going to be even harder if the nominee doesn’t have statewide experience or at least name recognition outside a legislative district.

Comment by OutOfState Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:25 pm

  35. ==[Sanguinetti] has statewide experience and name-recognition==

    Did a Sanguinetti write this?

Comment by lakeside Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:27 pm

  36. There is not one candidate mentioned that is worthy of support. Erika Harold? - no. Jeanne Ives? - no way. Who is Truax? Sanguinetti? The GOP needs to try harder. I vote none of the above.

Comment by Taylor Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:39 pm

I love the idea that people think a two-time loser is suddenly going to beat an incumbent who hasn’t lost an election in 37 years.

Oh yeah, in a presidential year, with a republican on top of the ticket that lost by 17 points to Hillary Clinton.

  38. Joe Walsh

Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:51 pm

  39. Rahm Emanuel. Two more years in finance will give him an opportunity to replenish his bank account and the nomination of a progressive Democratic presidential candidate will make it possible for the GOP to recruit a Dem whose relationship with business is in sync with its own

Comment by Truthteller Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:52 pm

  40. Innits best case scenario, the GOP doesn’t win this seat running to the right. Moderates who appeal to a broad electorate are the key to victory. Mark Kirk may have made Dan Proft’s head explode, but a suburban female saw him as the reasonable choice in 2010.

Comment by Token Conservative Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:53 pm

  41. Who is Truax? Sanguinetti?

Found the guy who just got into IL politics.

Truax ran for the senate seat in 2014. Sanguinetti is the immediate past Lt. Governor, the first Hispanic American and Latina to hold that role). She’s currently running for the IL-6th.

  42. Token Conservative, smart observation, that’s why the suggestions of Dold and Dillard are reasonable.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 3:58 pm

  43. Only a hardcore conservative will come out from GOP primary, and a cakewalk win for Durban in Nov 2020. Illinois GOP lacks moderates, as most states do now.

  44. “- The Reasonable Man - Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 4:06 pm:

As of right now it is:
    Peggy Hubbard vs. Robert Marshall”

The question was whether the GOP would find a top tier candidate. I guess your answer is no.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 4:19 pm

  45. Wensicia,

Joe Walsh has been surprisingly harsh about Trump on twitter and that would prevent him from running.

Yes, we have reached the point where you read a Joe Walsh tweet and think ‘that seems rational’

  51. Peggy Hubbard is the best choice. A female African American Conservative. Navy vet, ex police officer with police officer husband who was shot on duty. Durbin won’t be able to use politics of division against her.

    Comment by Eire17 Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 8:48 pm

  55. Dr. Marshall will easily win the primary. He’s an army veteran and a former Burr Ridge village trustee. He’s pro-life, pro-gun rights, anti-illegal alien, and pro-tax cuts.

Comment by Conservative Veteran Tuesday, Jun 18, 19 @ 10:15 pm

  56. @One Man 4:30–

Holy cow, Walsh can be reasonable?

If I had had time to go on CapFax earlier today, I would have taken your post as a signal to start drinking.

Good whiskey, of course, and I promise to bring a couple of cases to share with everyone here.
