  4. Remember Greg Holland signing with the Cardinals in 2018, ……. neither do I. Good luck with Craig.

  5. It’s nice to see some of these White Sox youngsters putting together nice seasons (Anderson, Moncada, Giolito) but I still have no faith in this front office’s ability to put the pieces around this young core that will put them over the top.

I root for the players at this point.

  6. Cubs fans have to have a spring in their step this morning about the Craig Kimbrel signing by Theo Epstein.

Despited the fact they have the 5th highest paiid reliever- Brandon Morrow, and the 11th highest paid- Pedro Strop, both of whom have been injured, they spent the money to shore up the biggest weakness on the team.

  7. Ricketts to hold Trump donor retreat at Wrigley. More happy than ever to be a Sox fan.

  8. All of Bote’s seven ribbies last night came with two outs.

On his tater, there were two outs before Heyward and Contreras got on in front of him.

Nice to see some clutch in a season with 11 blown saves to-date already.

Hope Kimbrel can suit up soon and bring some stability to that bullpen.

    That stung.

  10. The dumpster fire that is the Cardinals have benefited greatly by the run the Blues are on. All eyes are on the Blues for now,
but soon the focus will be back on the inept Redbirds. Cards management seems more determined than ever to stockpile the cash and flounder in mediocrity. Stop buying tickets, folks. Lets Go Blues…

I loved those Whiteyball teams. Pitching, defense and speed. Fundamentally sound in all aspects. There were years when you’d have five or six players with more than 30 stolen bases.

Things seemed to change when Dr. LaRussa showed up with his medicine bag, playing for the long ball.

Back in the day, it was like an I-55 pileup watching old flatfoot Cub sluggers like Kingman, Bobby Murcer, Keith Moreland try to play the outfield, or Ron Cey and Larry Bowa the infield, on that fast carpet in giant old Busch.

Horrifying, but you couldn’t look away.

  15. Great to watch Lucas Giolito emerge as a #1 or #2 starter. The White Sox are going to be tough next year and in the years to come once they get a few more of their injured guys back.

  16. Approaching the 40 year anniversary of Disco Demolition Night.

Comment by City Zen Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 10:32 am

  17. Disco Demo…they are even inviting Steve Dahl back, albeit celebrating a month early. it was quite a scene back in the day. people climbing into the left field stands from the outside wall through the grates. no security ringing the field so when one knucklehead went over, the flow started and there was no one there to stop them. at least Dahl halted disco. and, no, it was not a racist homophobic bent. it was where is my rock music? I still recall when the station he was on turned disco one morning as I dialed it up. thought it was a prank.

  18. –The Cards are a problem? They just swept the Cubs.–

The teams of the NL Central all have had some major breakdowns at times this season.

The last two nights, the Brewers have been clobbered at home by the Marlins, the worst team — by design — in the National League.

  19. ===Can anyone let me know where the STL Cardinal organization I once knew went to?===

Whole new world of baseball (shifts, launch angle, 99 mph pitches the norm, etc). Cards are playing cleaner baseball defensively with Schilt and have some Whitey scrappers like Bader & Wong. Their offense though is inconsistent-all or none. Long season-haven’t given up yet..

  20. Saw a video of Ron Santo at Wrigley last night. I really miss Ron Santo. RIP

Comment by Eddy Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 11:07 am

  21. Why is Descalso getting another start today? That dude would have a tough time making the grounds crew. He does not belong in an MLB lineup — especially the one with the highest payroll in the National League.

With Bote at third and KB in right, Heyward, Russell and CarGo are riding the pine. And the slow, iron-gloved dude batting .197 with no pop is starting.

Does Crazy Uncle Joe believe Descalso starting gives them the best chance to win today? Does he remember blowing that September lead to the Brewers? This game counts, too.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 11:47 am

  22. Now the Cubs just need to get a lead-off hitter. Pretty sure we don’t have one on the roster yet. Masson has tried just about everything there, damaging some careers in the process.

  23. –Now the Cubs just need to get a lead-off hitter. Pretty sure we don’t have one on the roster yet.–

It is ande should have been Almora two years ago. He never should have lost a start and all those ABs to Ian Happ (who’s batting .227 in Des Moines).

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 12:09 pm

  24. Joe doesn’t think Almora can hit right handed pitching. Won’t commit to playing him full time because of it.

Schwarber and Happ were both forced into the role and both failed spectacularly. Thankfully Schwarber bounced back, but Happ appears lost.

The won it all in ‘16 and then allowed their closer and lead off hitter to walk. They haven’t replaced them and haven’t gotten back to the WS. The window doesn’t stay open for long. Hopefully Kimbrel performs and Theo keeps looking for somebody to hit at the top of the order who can get on base and, God forbid, maybe steal a base once in a while.

  25. –Joe doesn’t think Almora can hit right handed pitching. Won’t commit to playing him full time because of it.–

One reason that he’s Crazy Uncle Joe. It’s not a matter of opinion.

In his career, Almora is .292 vs. lefties, .278 vs. righties. Team defense is much better with him in center and Heyward in right.

  26. I can’t disagree with anything Wordslinger has said on this topic. Almora should be batting leadoff and in CF every day. Descalso should be parking cars, at whatever they call Sox park these days. Joe must go.

  27. White Sox had another solid draft. 2021 World Series isn’t out of the question.

  28. I’d like to expand beyond baseball and ask a sports/politics question:

What is going on between DNR and the Triathletes? It seems they had a great relationship and then DNR has now banned them and given them short notice of this cancellation.

    Comment by I Miss Bentohs Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 2:17 pm

  29. This Cards fan thanks the Cubs for signing Heyward. The guy gets $21+ million a year, hits about 12 homers on average and apparently can’t throw all that well any longer.

Plus, The Cards have Dakota Hudson as the comp pick.

Standing O on that whole deal!

    Comment by Pick a Name Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 2:34 pm

  30. This Cubs fan takes that trade 10 times again. Jason Heyward is a Gold Glove in right field. Can’t through that well??? I assume you haven’t watched any Cubs games lately, Mr. Cards fan. Although his bat is not what is was with the Cards, he is a Gold Glove every day in right field.

    Comment by L.A. Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 2:40 pm

  31. L.A., you must not have watched the series last week. Matt Carpenter at third, routine fly to medium right field and Carp scored and it wasn’t that close. When Carp took off I thought he would be out by 10 feet.

Heyward had another throw that didn’t have much on it. I think his Gold Glove days are likely over. Foe $21+ mil, you should be getting much more.

    Comment by Pick a Name Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 3:00 pm

  32. –This Cards fan thanks the Cubs for signing Heyward.–

You certainly can’t overestimate the comedic entertainment value of Jose Martinez in right field. Worth the price of admission. He makes Dave Kingman look like Roberto Clemente.

How’s the Big Man hitting? Driving in tons of runs to make up for the ones he gives away in the field?

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 3:03 pm

  33. PAN, Dexter Fowler is being paid $16.5 million to bat .240. He’s a little better this year than last, but as long as we’re discussing bad contracts for washed up players, I didn’t want to overlook Fowler.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 3:06 pm

  34. Fowler is a bad contract, the guy just isn’t very good—want him back?

    Comment by Pick a Name Thursday, Jun 6, 19 @ 3:18 pm

  35. 11-3, 11-3. When the Cubbies get to 8 or 9 let me know. Cards 11 WS wins second to only the mighty Yanks.

I know it’s “what have you done for me lately” but some tough times doesn’t change the success rate of the two teams.
