Question of the day

Posted in:

* The setup…

IL Gov JB Pritzker says he already voted by mail for Chicago mayor, but won’t say who he voted for because he wants a better relationship with the next mayor than Rauner had with Emanuel; “you’ve got to have the governor and the mayor speaking no matter who becomes mayor”

— Tony Arnold (@tonyjarnold) February 21, 2019

* The Question: If you had to bet money, for whom do you think Gov. Pritzker voted? Don’t forget to explain.

  1. Bill Daley, as thanks for the great job he did for Chris Kennedy and his support of Bruce Rauner.

  2. Bill Daley, because two rich white guys understand each other.

  3. My gut reaction was Daley. But I realized that JB has more calculus than the rest of us, as he’ll want to have more control over Chicago than Rauner certainly did. So if he thinks Daley would be too much trouble, then I think he’d probably go Lightfoot. Good candidate, but without as much bigfooting around.

  4. Mendoza due to the fact he gets to appoint her replacement.

Comment by Fixer Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:38 pm

  5. Willie Wilson. Seriously, with Wilson as mayor, pretty much anything Pritzker will do is gonna look better by comparison.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:39 pm

  6. Mendoza, so he can name her replacement.

Comment by Not It Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:40 pm

  7. 1) Preckwinkle. JB is clearly a “dance with the one that bring ya” guy, as evidenced from his appointments and hires. Her position in the Cook County Party put Toni in the position of helping him the most.

    2) Mayors endorse governors, and still work with whomever wins. This is not about being able to work with whomever wins, but still being able to work with whomever loses. I think he is more worried about not being able to work with whomever doesn’t win - Mendoza or Preckwinkle. There is a lot of bad blood brewing between those two camps.

Comment by Mad Maxx Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:41 pm

  8. Daley. Because his main advantage in his current election is money. And JB has the money to negate that strength.

Comment by Henry Francis Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:42 pm

  9. Between Mendoza and Lightfoot, a toss-up for me.

With 14 names, whittling it to two…

Mendoza, as a running-mate on the ticket, he probably got to know her better…

Lightfoot, I think the Sun-Times endorsement goes a long way to explain why one, like Pritzker, could support.

I’m not too inclined to think the others are in that tier of “possible”.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:43 pm

  10. Preckwinkle, Vallas or Fioretti. All three have experience.

Of the three, I feel he would vote Preckwinkle first.

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:45 pm

  11. Mendoza. She helped take down Rauner.

Comment by JS Mill Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:45 pm

  12. Mendoza — Aside from familiarity with her from campaigning together, and getting to appoint her replacement, I suspect that she wouldn’t pull any punches in her official duties just because the Governor has a D after their name.

Comment by Anon Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:46 pm

  13. Probably Mendoza. Gives him a juicy position to appoint.

Comment by State Sen. Clay Davis Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:49 pm

  14. Chicago Party Aunt. Isn’t everyone voting for her?

Comment by Century Club Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:52 pm

  15. Mendoza for reasons previously mentioned.

Comment by The Dude Abides Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 12:59 pm

  16. “Preckwinkle. JB is clearly a ‘dance with the one that bring ya’ guy, as evidenced from his appointments and hires. Her position in the Cook County Party put Toni in the position of helping him the most.”

This was my conclusion and rationale as well.

But if he had to make his choice public, I think he would likely make a different choice.

  17. Given his past recorded conversations about governors making appointments, I am not so sure he’s salivating to replace a constitutional and revive all that history.

I’d bet he voted for Preckwinkle because she could do more to secure/deliver AfAm voters for him down the line.

Comment by Goner Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 1:03 pm

  18. Mendoza.

Appointment and the campaign they were tied at the hip together. She was the only one who visibly and tirelessly campaigned with him.

Comment by curtis Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 1:04 pm

  19. Daley, he knows Chicago can’t afford Prekwinkle and Mendoza is not really much of anything.

  20. –I’d bet he voted for Preckwinkle because she could do more to secure/deliver AfAm voters for him down the line.–

How? Has she “delivered” for someone before? She’s polling at 14% in the city. Not exactly a juggernaut.

Pritzker got 45% in the city in the primary and 80% in the general election. Maybe he could deliver for her.

    Overwhelmingly Daley.

  23. He voted for Madigan’s candidate, Preckwinkle.

Comment by NeverPoliticallyCorrect Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 1:21 pm

  24. He got to know Susana and her capabilities very well during the campaign so he probably voted for Daley.

Comment by Peotone Peter Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 1:28 pm

  25. Preckwinkle….she is a realist, gets things done, and will deal. Pragmatism, not idealism, is the key.

Comment by wondering Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 1:30 pm

  26. Daley. I think JB understands that the next Chicago Mayor will need to aggressively encourage more affluent growth at a significant cost to some communities. More gentrification is needed to pay the certain to come significant increases in taxation. Seems Daley is the candidate with the right skill set and fewer connections to the communities likely to be harmed.

  29. -“Mendoza, as a running-mate on the ticket, he probably got to know her better…”

This is why he probably voted for someone other than Susana.

  30. Daley, because that’s the way the wind is blowing.

Comment by Dome Gnome Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 1:45 pm

  31. Mendoza. Gets the appointment. and she would be easier to handle.

  32. My guess is he did a write in in order to be authentically neutral. Perhaps Oscar.

Comment by Minooka Molly Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 2:15 pm

  33. Mendoza. She has been an ally and has a bright future. She may not have much clout in the next two years as we might see a variant of the Council Wars with the new Mayor.

  34. Gerry Chico, because he is the best candidate.

  36. Tossup between Daley and Mendoza. He’s comfortable with the Daley’s of the world, but with Mendoza he appoints replacement and she won’t make trouble for him.

Comment by Independent Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 2:45 pm

  37. Whoever Madigan told him to vote for

Comment by Defend the Consitution Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 3:14 pm

  38. –Whoever Madigan told him to vote for–

Of course. It’s perfectly logical that a multi-billionaire spent $170 million of his own money to get the most powerful office in the state so he could be bossed around by the majority leader in one chamber of the General Assembly.

Madigan sure has some of you bamboozled as to his power.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 4:02 pm

  39. If I had to bet money…I think I’d pass on the bet. I think he’d be ok with most of them. Have no idea who he is “personally” the closest to. Whoever that is, is who I’d guess.

    Comment by A guy Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 4:34 pm

  40. Appears the Preckwinkle peeps are feeling some heat from Lightfoot. Frontrunners don’t tweet Nuremberg Trial references unless there’s some panic.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 6:29 pm

  41. Not surprised at all about the Prekwinkle panic. She will be lucky to make it to the runoff and will lose to whoever she runs against.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Feb 21, 19 @ 6:57 pm

  42. The white progressives seem to be gravitating towards Lightfoot, so the panic makes sense.
