My gut reaction was Daley. But I realized that JB has more calculus than the rest of us, as he’ll want to have more control over Chicago than Rauner certainly did. So if he thinks Daley would be too much trouble, then I think he’d probably go Lightfoot. Good candidate, but without as much bigfooting around.

1) Preckwinkle. JB is clearly a “dance with the one that bring ya” guy, as evidenced from his appointments and hires. Her position in the Cook County Party put Toni in the position of helping him the most.
2) Mayors endorse governors, and still work with whomever wins. This is not about being able to work with whomever wins, but still being able to work with whomever loses. I think he is more worried about not being able to work with whomever doesn’t win - Mendoza or Preckwinkle. There is a lot of bad blood brewing between those two camps.

Daley. Because his main advantage in his current election is money. And JB has the money to negate that strength.

Between Mendoza and Lightfoot, a toss-up for me.
With 14 names, whittling it to two…
Mendoza, as a running-mate on the ticket, he probably got to know her better…
Lightfoot, I think the Sun-Times endorsement goes a long way to explain why one, like Pritzker, could support.
I’m not too inclined to think the others are in that tier of “possible”.

Preckwinkle, Vallas or Fioretti. All three have experience.
Of the three, I feel he would vote Preckwinkle first.

Mendoza — Aside from familiarity with her from campaigning together, and getting to appoint her replacement, I suspect that she wouldn’t pull any punches in her official duties just because the Governor has a D after their name.

This was my conclusion and rationale as well.
But if he had to make his choice public, I think he would likely make a different choice.

Given his past recorded conversations about governors making appointments, I am not so sure he’s salivating to replace a constitutional and revive all that history.
I’d bet he voted for Preckwinkle because she could do more to secure/deliver AfAm voters for him down the line.

Mendoza.
Appointment and the campaign they were tied at the hip together. She was the only one who visibly and tirelessly campaigned with him.

How? Has she “delivered” for someone before? She’s polling at 14% in the city. Not exactly a juggernaut.
Pritzker got 45% in the city in the primary and 80% in the general election. Maybe he could deliver for her.

Daley. I think JB understands that the next Chicago Mayor will need to aggressively encourage more affluent growth at a significant cost to some communities. More gentrification is needed to pay the certain to come significant increases in taxation. Seems Daley is the candidate with the right skill set and fewer connections to the communities likely to be harmed.

Tossup between Daley and Mendoza. He’s comfortable with the Daley’s of the world, but with Mendoza he appoints replacement and she won’t make trouble for him.

Of course. It’s perfectly logical that a multi-billionaire spent $170 million of his own money to get the most powerful office in the state so he could be bossed around by the majority leader in one chamber of the General Assembly.

If I had to bet money…I think I’d pass on the bet. I think he’d be ok with most of them. Have no idea who he is “personally” the closest to. Whoever that is, is who I’d guess.

Not surprised at all about the Prekwinkle panic. She will be lucky to make it to the runoff and will lose to whoever she runs against.
