*** UPDATE *** I just talked to Sen. Oberweis. He says the person who filed the paperwork for him accidentally checked the wrong box. He’s running for US Congress, not US Senate.

…Adding… Tribune

If Oberweis enters the U.S. House contest, he cannot seek re-election to his Illinois Senate seat which is also up for election in 2020.

[ *** End Of Update *** ]

* He had been talking about running for Congress against freshman Democrat Lauren Underwood…

  1. Not to knock Underwood, but didn’t she win because Hultgren fumbled and bumbled up into November? Not a good look for Jim2020 to mess up even the most menial of tasks out the gate

  2. Oh great. I’m sure he won’t do or say anything cringeworthy running against Rep. Underwood. /s

  4. Can we just go ahead and call this race already?

    Underwood: 90%
    Oberweis: 4%
    Write-in candidates: 6%

  5. I just assumed that Obie always checked the boxes for every race and hoped for the best.

Some interesting numbers for the 14th:

    2012: Hultgren +19, Romney +10

    2014: Hultgren +32

    2016: Hultgren +19, Trump +4

    2018: Underwood +5

That’s a remarkable, quick change from bedrock safe GOP to competitive, in a district that’s 86% white.

  6. If he can’t check a box correctly, how can he represent IL in Congress?

  7. And they’re off… to go re-file paperwork.

  8. Checking the Wrong Boxes could be a good title for an Oberweis biography.

  9. Well played 47th. Maybe that checked box could be blown up and put on the back of a milk carton…

  14. It’s bad enough that Oberweis “represents” a consituency of Illinoisans in Illinois state government. You do not want this man anywhere near the workings of our national government.

I’ve had dealings with him; so has dozens of downstate GOP county chairmen in previous primaries and elections.

    Comment by Stumpy's bunker Tuesday, Feb 19, 19 @ 1:06 pm

  15. One would think that Underwood would be quite vulnerable.

But bet she is hoping that Oberweis will the Republican candidate running agaisnt her.
