AFL-CIO launches “massive” digital ad buy

Posted in:

* Press release…

With fewer than three weeks left before Election Day, the AFL-CIO has launched a massive digital ad campaign to mobilize working people across the country. This latest piece of a multifaceted political program will deploy a blend of Facebook, Instagram and Google ads to boost labor-endorsed candidates in 27 gubernatorial, Senate and House races. In Illinois, the ads will highlight J.B. Pritzker.

This single largest digital ad buy in the AFL-CIO’s history will reach more than 10 million voters in 15 states, including Illinois, by Election Day. It is part of a broader get-out-the-vote campaign that includes a nationwide member-to-member field program, direct mail and radio ads.

“The working men and women of the Illinois AFL-CIO are proud to stand behind J.B. Pritzker and against Bruce Rauner’s anti-worker agenda,” said Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael Carrigan. “With just a few weeks to go, we are excited to add this digital campaign to our Labor 2018 program and ensure victory on Election Day.”

“In these final weeks, the labor movement is going to bring it home for pro-worker candidates at every level,” said AFL-CIO Communications Director Josh Goldstein. “For months, we’ve been mobilizing our members and getting ready for this moment, winning key victories along the way. Now, we’re poised for a labor wave across the country and this creative digital campaign is a key part of it.”

* Here’s the Illinois ad

Remember, this is an online ad. They generally have to be short and to the point to be effective.

  1. A governor for working people? Now that’s funny

  2. the music is too loud you can barely hear the voice over.

  3. Nice ad short but sweet- problem is it will pull votes from “The labor” candidate Sam McCann.

  4. But…but… worker strike at JB hotel….. non union worker at JB mansion…union busting at sea-dog.

    Comment by Donnie Elgin Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:23 am

  5. Why would you put a X in box above Rauner? Maybe over his face?

    Comment by Madame Defarge Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:26 am

  6. ===Why would you put a X ===

    Agree. The visual is confusing.

    Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:28 am

  7. Short and most likely very true.

    Who thinks Pritzker will hold up budgets to get anti-union policies passed, such as local stripping of collective bargaining and repealing prevailing wage?

    Who thinks Pritzker would have filed a national RtW lawsuit against public employees and offered state workers the dreck contract terms Rauner has, and then force it on them and fight a continuing impasse battle?

    Who thinks Pritzker’s number one priority is getting people out of public employee unions—more important than what the GA and state government do?

    Of course Pritzker has had union problems, with the mansion and Hyatt, but I don’t think he’s Rauner by any stretch. We have to make tough choices always. I voted for Kennedy because he lives his belief in unions, but political purity can be immature and dangerous.

  8. ==problem is it will pull votes from “The labor” candidate Sam McCann==

    That’s a feature, not a bug.

    Comment by Arsenal Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:30 am

  9. ===it will pull votes from===

    … Bruce Rauner.

    The goal is to defeat Bruce Rauner, not elect Sam McCann.

    An odd visual, loud music, yeah I see where they’re going, but there are obvious tweaks that were left… untweaked.

    Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:32 am

  10. JB, Pro Labor.
    Except many labor people (tradesmen and tradeswomen) know better. Rauner may not be their guy, but many tradespeople aren’t gaga over JB. Aside from being not a terrific ad…it asks them to be ignorant of history. Their memories just might be a little better than that.

    Comment by A guy Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:49 am

  11. Awesome, he hates minority’s and union members. Total hypocrisy!

    Comment by Taxpayer Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:51 am

  12. ==Their memories just might be a little better than that.==

    So you have hoped this entire campaign, and yet labor keeps showing up for him. The trades moreso than the public sector unions, in fact.

    Comment by Arsenal Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 9:52 am

  13. No bad, quick and to the point. I agree the music should have been toned down, and an X over Rauner’s face would have been more effective. C+

    You still question voters’ ability to selectively remember when you have already forgiven and forgotten Bruce Rauner’s signing HB 40?

    And you acted like it was such a big deal at the time.

    You’re loony toons. I’ve neither forgiven or forgotten. Doubt they’ve forgotten the heat lamps on the workers at the hotel in 90 degree weather either Yoda.

    The solution to that terrible decision on that bill isn’t JB. But I’m sure he works just fine for you.

  17. ==And you acted like it was such a big deal at the time.==

    It’ll never not be a big deal.

    Comment by A guy Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 10:22 am

  18. ===You’re loony toons. I’ve neither forgiven or forgotten.===

    … and yet you openly support Rauner, and will be voting for Rauner.

    Don’t be a “Lucky Pierre”, do I need to again show your own words?

    Labor knows.

    Rauner is a bad actor for them. Will Rauner get 2 in 5 Labor households?

    Rauner is barely polling above 30%

  19. ==I’ve neither forgiven or forgotten.==

    The problem is, the exact same rationale you have articulated for voting for Rauner anyway applies to union members voting for JB anyway.

    Hey Ars, if you see some Pecan Pie on the window sill, point it out to me. All I see are mud pies, and if I have to eat one, I’m picking the smallest one.

    Comment by A guy Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 11:39 am

  22. If the choice was between an Edgar or Thompson vs. Pritzker, some or many unions may not have backed Pritzker. But Union Bustin’ Bruce (not tryin’ to be clever) is by far the worst choice for unions, between the two men.

    Union busting is Rauner’s political raison d’etre and his vision for fixing the state—on the backs and out of the pockets of workers.

    I get that you hope that they don’t (now comes the part where you deny that you want the guy you’re voting for to win) but frankly, your own experience demonstrates that partisans gonna partisan.

  24. “My fellow Illinoisans, I want you all to support union working folk. Now you don’t have to buy union or hire union, but your support is important”-JB.

  25. Why are organizations wasting money on a campaign that already has a 20 to 30 point lead?

    Comment by Occam Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 11:58 am

  26. == if you see some Pecan Pie on the window sill, point it out to me==

    *Points at JB Pritzker*

    I get the torment you’re going through, but I actually like the guy I’m voting for. And if nothing else, he never lied to you about HB40.

    Comment by Arsenal Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:14 pm

  27. Vote your conscience Ars. No problem here with that.
    There’s nobody in this race who will be a great friend to the Brotherhood and Sisterhood. Neither have any history of that.

    I don’t have any “hopes” for who’s going to win. I rue either way. Seeing pensions (earned) as leverage is sickening. Fixing those will take a very fragile partnership of everyone including those who have a stake in saving themselves.
    You can make them follow the rules. You can’t make something be solvent.

  30. How can you be a great friend of labor when you don’t use union trades. Maybe you’re just a good friend. Maybe you’re just an acquaintance. Maybe you’re just a political opportunist.
