Pritzker campaign calls Rauner “Governor Veto”

Posted in:

* DGA…

Over the last few days, Governor Bruce Rauner’s unleashed a “series of controversial” vetoes on bipartisan legislation that left one analyst suggesting they “probably didn’t help him” in his tough reelection battle. In fact, Rauner made abundantly clear to Illinois teachers, veterans, families, and immigrants that he has turned his back on them.

“This week, Bruce Rauner once again abandoned Illinois teachers, veterans, and families in pursuit of his fleeting reelection bid,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “Already badly trailing in the polls after a two-year budget impasse, Rauner is adding insult to injury by vetoing critical legislation that would help working families across the state.”

* The governor has signed and vetoed so many bills the past couple of weeks that it’s all become a blur. So, I was wondering when I read that release earlier today if anyone was going to put some of his more controversial vetoes together into one list. The Pritzker campaign did that this afternoon…

Governor Veto is on a roll, nullifying bill after bill that would benefit working families. With so much critical legislation tossed aside by this failed governor, the Rauner campaign is left with no choice but to orchestrate a Veto Distraction Tour to provide cover from Rauner’s failures.

Here are 10 bills Bruce Rauner vetoed this session that he doesn’t want to talk about:

“Illinoisans aren’t interested in a desperate distraction tour from Bruce Rauner as he casts aside bill after bill that would help working families thrive,” said Pritzker campaign spokesman Jason Rubin. “Governor Veto can try and run from his own record but this failed leader’s damage to communities across this state and resistance to progress is plain for all to see.”

There’s a ton more nuance to those vetoes than the Pritzker people are admitting to, but as I’ve said a kabillion times before, voters don’t do nuance.

  1. Dear JB:

Here is one major issue that you don’t want to talk about. What are your proposed income tax rates? Because Rob Martwick’s rates hit everyone making more than $15,000.

  2. Not sure how being a veto over bills pushed by Madigan and crew is a terrible badge to have to wear. Pretty easy to spin as a badge of honor for a lot of voters. If I was JB I’d be more worried about the perception that he wouldn’t be a stop against Madigan.

  3. Any 224, I wonder, do you really believe Pritzker should be worried?

  4. The bill to raise the tobacco minimum age of purchase to 21 was also vetoed.

  5. To hear some of these commentators, you would think that these bills only need one vote, the Speaker’s, to pass through both the House and Senate. Some of these measures were bipartisan, and will be overridden causing further embarrassment for Governor Veto.

Governor Veto has vetoed a lot of good bipartisan legislation during his term and richly deserves the nickname. Government by stalemate is not going to move Illinois forward.

  6. Not speaking of Rauner or those specific bills, but nothing wrong with a Governor exercising veto power.

  7. All the teachers full-time teachers making under $11,000/yr should vote for JB.

  8. Anon - did I miss something? are Martwick and Jb the same person?

  9. Rauner might embrace “Governor Veto”, it fits in with the fightin’ Madigan message.

All public school teachers, and really all state or public employees should vote for JB. Bruce has made it pretty clear how he feels about you.

  11. How about they stop passing these crap bills that nobody cares about and focus on balanced budgets, back bills and our crumbling infrastructure. We have enough laws on the books. Who cares about these politicians pet projects.

  12. Pritzker’s attacks are all good fun, but he’s vulnerable on his tax plan. While I prefer J.B. to GovJunk, if Pritzker isn’t forced to spell out the details, you can bet middle income people will bear much of the burden of his “soak the rich” plan.

  13. Voters don’t do nuance

Like the fact there is a big difference between an immigrant and an undocumented immigrant?

JB and the majority of the Democrats don’t see one.

  14. (Sigh)

    “Governor Veto”

The goal is that Rauner is portrayed as grossly inept, not in charge, spiteful and hurtful to higher education and social services, and someone the whole GA this last session cut out of the budget.

    K?

Got all that? You with me? You following along?

You also want to say governors own. They own they own their vetoes, they own their inaction, their choices, governors own.

Got *that*? So far, you keeping up?

Calling Rauner “Governor Veto”… you just undercut most of every narrative you wanted.

    Congratulations.

    For the love of…. Pete….

You actually made the Rauner “worth fightin’ for”… legitimate.

“You bet I vetoed, I’d veto again. My job as governor is… “

    It’s a head scratcher.

You know you don’t have to keep changing or mixing up the messaging… right? You know that. Right?

Why legitimize something that Rauner can say it’s him… being a governor?

You’re up 16 points… Rauner is unliked, has no record, has said he’s not in charge, and is considered the worst Republican governor in America… why tag him with a name that shows Rauner… doing Governor-type things?

    (Sigh)
