Yeah, this line will never find its way into a TV ad. Nope. Not a chance

Rauner Yesterday: “I’m So Proud Of What’s Going On In Washington, D.C.”

At a campaign stop yesterday, Governor Bruce Rauner sang the praises of the White House’s agenda on the same day that two of President Donald Trump’s close associates became felons. The Herald & Review captured Rauner’s full embrace:

“It’s an honor for me to work for you and I’m so proud of what’s going on in Washington, D.C. In Washington they are cutting taxes, they’re reducing regulation, they’re fighting against the illegal immigration, they’re fighting against unfair trade barriers and unfair trade deals. They’re creating more jobs and helping the American workers. We’ve got higher wages now and more jobs now because of that. Illinois is strong because of what is happening in Washington and what our doing in our administration.”

President Trump lost Illinois by 17 points, but a recent NBC/Marist poll found him with higher favorability ratings than Rauner (30% to 26%).

“As Donald Trump’s top advisers head to prison and his administration is enveloped in scandal, Bruce Rauner is proud of President Trump’s work in Washington,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “It’s no wonder that Illinois voters view Bruce Rauner, lacking in principles and lacking in accomplishments, as a failed leader.”

Wait. I thought people were leaving in droves and that Illinois was in a death spiral. Now Illinois is strong?

He needs to cut back on the “truth isn’t truth” Kool-Aid.

  3. So Rauner thinks *this* is what people want to hear? That he’s proud of what the GOP has become? If it were at all possible, Lincoln would be weeping over his party.

  4. Nail, meet coffin.

  5. I think subconsciously Rauner wants to lose and move to Italy, which he’s suggested will be his next stop if defeated. There, he can play “martyr in exile”. Though I think Paris would be a better and more literary choice for “American in Exile”: think Hemingway, James Baldwin.

    Yeah it will - Pritzker’s.

  10. When you have NO constituency, you say things that mean so much to people… negatively.

Rauner is unlikable, this won’t make him any more likable in a state Trump lost by 16, and is polling worse than Rauner now.

  15. ===they’re fighting against unfair trade barriers and unfair trade deals.===

I assume that this is a reference to increasing tariffs which will increase prices of imported goods. I wonder if the consumers of Illinois will be as proud of the higher tariffs when they go to buy something at the store as Rauner appears to be?

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Aug 22, 18 @ 3:34 pm

  16. Isn’t Illinois one of the states most hurt by the trade tariffs, (agriculture)

And Rauner likes what is happening in DC…

So, Rauner does like hurting Illinois, maybe this makes sense?

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 22, 18 @ 3:37 pm

  17. He’s totally lost his mind. The biggest casualty of the trade war is soybeans, of which Illinois is the biggest producer. I hope Pritzker stands up for Illinois farmers, doesn’t sound like Rauner is.

Comment by TopHatMonocle Wednesday, Aug 22, 18 @ 3:37 pm

  18. Paul Manafort worked for Trump’s presidential campaign for about three months in total, give or take a day or two. His crimes predated the 2016 election by quite a few years. J. B. Pritzker was one of Rod Blagojevich’s largest contributors and continued his association with the imprisoned governor long after other Democrats began to keep Blago at arm’s length.

  24. Tryin’ a bit too hard to convince the Ives base. Though it might not hurt him. As the old saying goes; Trump can shoot someone on 5th Ave and it would not matter to his voters.

  25. Make up your mind, governor…. after your “public service” do you want Donnie to invite you to Washington, or do you want to go to Italy?

  26. Rauner could be angling for an Ambassadorship.

I’m sure Ambassador Gidwitz could put in a good word…

  27. Someone in Rauner’s campaign is clearly paying attention to the polls. 30% is better than 26%. BTIA.

Comment by Jibba Wednesday, Aug 22, 18 @ 4:22 pm

  28. Well, he’s below Trump in approval so what does this hurt? It might get him up to Trump levels of approval in Illinois. Not that such a thing will help him win, but it might be slightly less embarrassing to tell at dinner parties in Italy.

  32. Careful, governor….Kyrgyzstan has an opening for U.S. Ambassador…but good luck finding a gated community or wine club there. Better to angle for wine steward on Betsy DeVos’ yacht.

Illinois Republicans downballot may feel the impact of the governor’s enthusiastic MAGAesque pronouncements.

Spin-o-rama. I’m getting nauseous. Isn’t Illinois terrible because of Madigan and corrupt insiders?

  34. = We’ve got higher wages now =

No, they are actually down. In a labor shortage/full employment. Go figure that one out.

    =Paul Manafort worked for Trump’s …=

Either you are replying on the wrong blog or you are the victim of a concussion. Either way you may need to sit out a few plays.

  35. Tell it to the bean farmers.

To be fair, Rauner was exploding debt in a growing economy long before Trump.

Trump is borrowing in the capital markets by selling T-Bonds to willing investors.

Rauner borrowed from state vendors and social service providers who provided goods and services in good faith, then got stuck with a pile of unpaid invoices.

  36. Rauner visited my hometown. My mom gave me a similar report. I thought she was exaggerating. I just didn’t believe he was so publicly supportive of Trump. My mom also said she wasn’t sure what was going on, whether she was sitting at the Democrat table or what, but she saw a lot of little old ladies rolling their eyes.

  37. –Paul Manafort worked for Trump’s presidential campaign for about three months in total, give or take a day or two.–

Five months, to be exact. Manafort got pushed out when they found out the federales were on him for his Ukraine hijinks.

When Manafort and Stone opened their DC lobbying firm in 1980, their first client was Trump.

    Truth is truth.

  38. “Paul Manafort worked for Trump’s presidential campaign for about three months in total, give or take a day or two. His crimes predated the 2016 election by quite a few years.”

Paul Manafort is due back in court in Washington next month for a second trial centered on allegations of lying to the FBI, money laundering and foreign lobbying.

A career criminal like Trump’s former campaign chairman doesn’t get tried for his many federal crimes all at once.
