* Last week…

The governor has until Tuesday to act on a bill requiring a 21-star US flag to be flown in front of the Capitol until December 31st. It passed the House last spring but wasn't voted on in the Senate until May 2018.

The governor signed the bill the very next day. Why 21 stars? We were the 21st state, so that’s how the flag would’ve looked after we were admitted in 1818.

* Today…

Would someone in Springfield please go check if the Capitol is PA 100-668-compliant? https://t.co/yvm02EwaV6 pic.twitter.com/2UqZhk32g3

* I asked the bill’s sponsor Rep. Tim Butler if he had a photo…

  1. Luckily, Madigan had an original from his first term.

    (Footnote: the 21-star was the U.S. flag from July 4, 1819 to July 4, 1820, when the 23-star was adopted when Alabama and Maine were admitted to the Union).

  2. Nice, but someday I’d like to see a 52 star flag, for Puerto Rico and Washington DC.

  3. This is great. We need to remember that some things are suppose to be bigger than partisan bickering. The bicentennial of Illinois is one of those things.

    The symbolism there, the history of this state is there with flag, 21 stars strong… and not even a civil war and the strifes thereafter, we’re still here.

  8. To be fair the legislative delay is consistent with the flags history. The 21 star flag was in use from July 4, 1819 to July 3, 1820 which means they waited nearly 7 months after Illinois’ admission.

  28. Those complaining about two senators per state, regardless of population need to remember that without equal representation in the senate, there wouldn’t be a reason for any territory to become a state. No one would be voluntarily willing to let people living in distant large cities rule over them as though they were colonies.

    Huh? Who do you think runs federal territories, then and now? Were you under the impression that they were/are independent?
