Pritzker hit yet again on taxes

Posted in:

* This tracker video is from a meet-and-greet with Pritzker supporters last Saturday in Evanston

* Transcript…

Let’s actually pass a balanced budget with a progressive income tax - you can hear what a theme of this campaign is gonna be, right?

* From Will Allison at the Rauner campaign…

JB Pritzker just admitted that raising taxes will be the theme of his campaign. It’s a clear contrast with Bruce Rauner who knows that Illinoisans are already over taxed.

The Pritzker campaign responded with a link. Click here.

They don’t appear to be too worried.

  1. Have to say, the link does answer a lot of questions.

  2. For a guy that can guarantee that neither Pritzker or Rauner will be getting my vote, I’ve just gotta say, well played Pritzker group. Well played.

Just had a thought, I wonder what campaign season would look like if Redditors were running them?… Probably MUCH more enjoyable.

  3. I like the response, it made me laugh. A progressive income tax isn’t necessarily a hike, though would just make future hikes easier to pass. And if the state just wanted to break even, the top earners (don’t know where the cutoff would have to be) would have a hike, but the majority would have a cut. So the rhetoric is so much hot air and a little bit of paranoia…

  4. Excellent. Please make this the theme of the campaign. It’s popular. Of course Pritzker’s plan has to cut taxes for many, so that’s equally important. If it does, push that baby hard.

Rauner has staked a ridiculous position. He is flat-out lying about the dangers of a progressive income tax. He is as rigid as can be about the super-rich not paying a penny more than everyone else in the state.

  6. I hope Rauner’s got better than this. Hoping Illinois voters can’t understand the distinction between what JB’s actually proposing and “tax him omg!” isn’t going to bring him back from 30 points underwater, or whatever insane negatives he’s hitting. At some point he has to find a reason for people to vote *for* him instead of against his opponent.

  7. Great response.

  8. The new state and local tax write off work around is not going to fly with the IRS.

Throw a new progressive income tax on top of what will be starkly higher tax bills already next year and you will see a statewide revolt from the high earners who face potentially massive increases in their taxes with that hypothetical 1-2 punch.

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 3:24 pm

  9. I guess I was glad that the link was “Never Gonna Give You Up,” instead of “Together Forever.” Otherwise, I’d have been Rauner rolled.

  10. Right now… Will Allison isn’t matching up too well to the Pritzker Crew.

Get me the “Superstars”, then I’ll measure how close…

The BTIA(tm)… Better Try It Again.

    Capiche?

There fixed it for ya!! /s

  12. Love it conceptually, but Rick Astley? Ugh. Can’t we leave him in the 80s where he belongs.

  13. Hilarious, I don’t get it, but hilarious

Comment by Rutro Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 3:57 pm

  14. JB is all about paying his fair share

    Since Tuesday March 20th

Still waiting on the reinstallation of the toilets in the spare mansion, the 230 K in property tax avoided and the repatriation of the Cayman accounts

No Plan B if he can’t get the progressive tax passed via a constitutional amendment, an extremely high bar that was not possible even for the 12 years the Democrats had control of Springfield

Hoodwinking voters into thinking someone else will pay for all of his proposals and employers won’t react by investing less in Illinois

Comment by Lucky Pierre Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 4:00 pm

  15. Bruce Rauner never has and never will be about paying his fair share, Lucky , Still waiting on how he justifies tripling his income since becoming Governor in Illinois, while so many others are hurting

Comment by Redraider Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 4:06 pm

  16. ===No Plan B if he can’t get the progressive tax passed via a constitutional amendment, an extremely high bar that was not possible even for the 12 years the Democrats had control of Springfield===

    (Sigh)

“Incumbent Governor Bruce Rauner has “No Plan B” as he couldn’t get any of the prevailing wage or collective bargaining diminishings passed, via property tax relief or starving social service and higher education. An extremely low bar that was not possible due in large part of Gov. Rauner’s failure to fully grasp the 60 and 30 votes needed to govern, the first and most important rule to control legislation and policy in Springfield”

    What else ya got?

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 4:08 pm

  17. Reraider, remind what did JB pay in Illinois income tax in 2014?

Comment by Ron Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 4:38 pm

  18. Grandson, you continue to say the same thing. Unfortunately, JB has yet to announce what these progressive rates might be.

Comment by Ron Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 4:47 pm

  19. ==an extremely high bar that was not possible even for the 12 years the Democrats had control of Springfield==

Before, on a day when defending Rauner required something different than today, you claimed that Democrats during the Blago/Quinn years didn’t even try to pass a progressive income tax. Now, it’s that they couldn’t pull it off. Fascinating stuff.

Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 4:49 pm

  20. Reraider- fortunately you are not the Stats treasurer. If Rauner’s income tripled due to his investments- his Illinois tax bill also tripled. Rauner does not take a salary from the State. Compare to the Big Boy JB- he pays no Illinois taxes based on what was reported and scammed Cook County on his property tax bill. Other then that JB seems like a great guy to be our next Dem Governor

  21. I am very interested in JBs plan since a couple of times a week he says his campaign pledge is to raise taxes. Not sure if you can run on that.Give me a plan

Comment by Silicon Prairie Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 5:33 pm

  22. Sue, JB didn’t scam. He’s not going to the cell next to blago. He took advantage of a loophole. You can too. I suggested it to my wife since we live so near to McDonald’s. She said,”Are you nuts? Am I going to get up in the night, dress and go to McDonald’s?” I’d certainly do it to a vacant investment property.
Oh. And I don’t pay IL income taxes either. My income is SS and a Federal pension. Should I voluntarily pay what I legally don’t owe?

Comment by Streamwood Retiree Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 10:08 pm

  23. It’s ironic that Rauner’s policies of not having a budget and not paying the state’s bills bills will result in higher taxes which hey’ll blame on the Democrats.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Apr 18, 18 @ 11:36 pm

  24. JB the one Democrat who could lose against Rauner

Comment by Bill Baar Thursday, Apr 19, 18 @ 7:44 am

  25. How much is the income tax in California?

    Income Tax Brackets

    Married, Filing Separately

    California Taxable Income

    Rate

    $41,629 - $52,612 8.00%
    $52,612 - $268,750 9.30%
    $268,750 - $322,499 10.30%

  26. Just imagine if we pay California’s income tax rate. persons/couples who earn $52,000 will pay 8%, persons/couples who earn $ 53,000 will pay over 9 %. Residents of Illinois will go packing out of the State
