Barickman gets “The Rauner Question”

Posted in:

* One of the most over-used dodges by House Democrats when asked where they stand on Speaker Madigan’s reelection is saying they want to first wait and see who the candidates are….

[Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington)] wished Rauner would have vetoed [HB40] because of the cost, and the Senator appeared to dodge the question of whether he will support Rauner for reelection or back a primary challenger.

“The reality is me – and any other Republican – are going to look at the field of prospective candidates for governor. We’re going to know what that field looks like here in just a few short weeks and I think we’re going to make our decisions based on [the candidates,]” he said.

As I noted in my newspaper column this week, these questions weren’t even being asked before the governor signed HB40. And now a bunch of Republicans are going to be put in an awkward situation, particularly if Rauner does get a primary opponent.

* Speaking of which, I can’t help but notice that Utica is about 80 miles and a world away from Rep. Jeanne Ives’ home town of Wheaton…

At the "Burgoo" Fesitval in Utica today with my fellow GOP Chairman Don Jensen and his awesome Republican team. I ran…

    -…whats the path to victory.-

Better than you think in a Republican Primary. A general election not so much.

  3. Rep. Ives running for governor would fill me with enough sustained rage to power me for many, many years. I hope she takes the plunge!

  4. Mr. Barickman is such a phony that Holden Caufield holds Barickman up to others to compare how phony they are to Barickman.

    To the Post,

    Mr. Barickman,

    You are a cafeteria conservative.

You voted to destroy social services, destroy state universities, places that help in your region and you feign “anger” at the signing of HB40, even though your own enabling helped Rauner in all the destruction and in Rauner signing the most liberal abortion bill by any governor anywhere… “but”…

===“The reality is me – and any other Republican – are going to look at the field of prospective candidates for governor. We’re going to know what that field looks like here in just a few short weeks and I think we’re going to make our decisions based on [the candidates,]” he said.===

… no one can out phony you when your righteous indignation needs to show to keep appearances going.

If anything has become more apparent, since Rauner, your resolute and what you actually stand for has dwindled to anything that Rauner tells you it should be, and your credentials to doing what’s best for your district, the state, the people of Illinois is just a secondary thought to…

… which defines and clarifies how Rauner becoming governor has changed you, perfectly.

    How proud you must be.

  5. –[Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington)] wished Rauner would have vetoed [HB40] because of the cost,…–

For real? That’s his claim? A guy who voted with Rauner every step of the way to pile on $12B in unpaid bills?

Geez, dude, take a real stand on something.

  6. I think she is really talented at framing issues and coming up with rather zingy one-liners off-the-cuff.

    (Not snark…)

  7. “…the Senator appeared to dodge the question of whether he will support Rauner for reelection…”

    Support who now?

  8. What if Rauner offered Jeanne a cool $10M to run against him in the primary so that he looks moderate for the general?

Yeah, I’m paranoid, but now that politics is just an oversized sandbox for people with more money than sense to play in, is that kind of tactic far off?

  9. To Rep. Ives,

If she secured $5 million to run ads the last 8 weeks, then that’s probably the best scenario for her.

She’ll lose, over under 35.5%… but at least it wouldn’t be a ridiculous $9.73 run with a traveling billboard and “periscope” media availability.

Get to $5 million, Rep. Ives, then you can lose by 20%… with dignity.

  10. ===[Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington)] wished Rauner would have vetoed [HB40] because of the cost,”===

    Oh jeez.

Cost for an abortion — $450 to $2800, depending on trimester, etc.

Average cost for a live birth — $18,000 for vaginal delivery; $30,000 for a C-section.

Do not let these liars and frauds and hypocrites get away with objecting to HB40 because of “cost.” Besides what Wordslinger said about voting with Rauner to run up the unpaid bill tab, the GA Raunerites secretly like HB40 because it saves on Medicaid.

  11. Run, Jeanne, Run. Got any Rauner Bucks left to help you out???

    Comment by Anon221 Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 4:55 pm

  12. Barickman won’t commit on supporting Rauner until he sees the list of candidates. He wants to “see what the field looks like.” What a great and thoughtful policy.

Of course in the same interview, he enthusiastically supports Erika Harold, describes how he is campaigning for her and what a great attorney general she will be. I guess in that case he has no need to “see what the field will look like.”

  13. Anyone but Rauner.

Comment by VanillaMan Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 5:12 pm

  14. We can all stop with the holier than tho hit on Sen Barickman. If you don’t like his voting record then great hit him with it. But what do you think he is going to say when posed with the question of support for the Governor? “oh of course I will be with my governor that signed a bill to have Medicaid fund abortions and a bill my base thinks makes Illinois a sanctuary state.” Heck there is time for the Governor to hit the trifecta, the only major issue he hasn’t gone against the base on is the second amendment.

Comment by Suburban Hillbilly Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 5:19 pm

  15. Keep asking that question. It’s going to be very entertaining reading all the goofy responses. To top that would be a follow-up question on whether the now aggrieved GOP legislators will return all that Rauner money. And will they ask the caucus to send back the Rauner money.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 5:48 pm
