Today’s quotable

* Illinois Review

“Are you stoned or just stupid?” freshman State Rep. Chad Hays (R-Danville) asked Democrat colleague State Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-Belleville) on the House floor Friday morning, when Hoffman presented one piece of legislation after another concerning workers compensation reform, for which he then urged a “No” vote.

“I didn’t put these proposals forward, the governor did - these are your proposals, not ours,” Hoffman said. “You can’t handle the truth. The governor hasn’t put a proposal forward, and we’re not working on the budget. Rome is burning.”

Friday morning, Hoffman proposed changes to the workers’ compensation system that would require the company to be at least 50 percent the cause for injuries, that American Medical Association’s injury guidelines to be used, and other proposals that had been discussed in legislative working groups.

But he asked that his colleagues vote no on each reform. Every one of the amendments the lawmaker proposed failed, just as he asked.

* Things are most definitely getting hairy…

When a long time Dem State Rep screams "Rome is Burning" about IL, he might want to self-report, not as mere fiddler but an arsonist. #Cmon

  1. Chad Hays is awesome. That is all.

  2. Jay’s always entertaining. Maybe we will see if these items from the working groups, which everyone was running away from yesterday, actually are in Rauner’s bill today.

  3. Hays needs some civility lessons.

    Things usually get testy around this time of year. Now that the Rauner election and slush fund has emboldened the minority, it’s going to be much harder to come to session ending compromises. The longer the session, the testier its going to get.

    I’m getting a license to sell body armor to lobbyists and others who may feel endangered by the Capitol climate.

  4. And this was actually one of the areas where there probably could have been a deal cut. Nice job “team of superstars”.

    And at least Chad did not follow in the footsteps of his predecessor to request a recess so he can go home and pack more unmentionables.

  5. “Who” is the Owl pointing to?

    The side effects of a Governor wanting what he wants, at the cost of civility by all(?)

    It’s only going to get worse, time is not the friend of civility in governing past May 31st. This is the residue that’s produced, by all.

  6. The number of legislators who would rather yell at each other than talk to each other, on both sides of the aisle, is alarmingly high.

  7. Regardless of whatever criticism Sandack may get from some here at times, that is one great quote.

  8. The ILGA needs to implement the ==Rich Rule== of decorum as recently implemented here.

    Especially in the closing days of regular session.

  10. The decibel level is not the issue, nor is civility. Those legislators who want to cut the benefits to injured workers should vote “aye” , and those against should vote “no”, and then move on.
    Why are the Republicans holding the budget hostage? It’s not a good idea to negotiate with hostage takers. It’s the policy of the U.S. government not to do so. If the hostage takers don’t get what they want, and kill the possibility of a balanced and humane budget, then they will be accountable for the damage they wreak, just as any group of terrorists would be.

  11. Stoned and stupid arent the same thing.

    Comment by Wordslinger Friday, May 22, 15 @ 11:57 am

  12. The nice thing here is there is no need to ==negotiate with hostage takers==.

    Passing a balanced, constitutional budget effectively ends the ==hostage negotiation==. That goes for Reps who feel Dems are the supposed hostage takers and Dems who feel Reps are the supposed hostage takers.

    What’s that? You can’t pass one on your own? You need to work with each other and compromise? Now there is a shocking development.

  13. Now following Sandack!!! Excellent quote.

  14. I’ve grown tired of OW’s owl thingy.
    Sandack’s tweet is on the mark. Rep. Hoffman, AKA Blago’s boy, certainly is guilty of holding a gas can as “Rome burns.” Wait until the Rauner air war starts… Comments like Jay’s make for great 30 second tv commercials.

  15. Let me guess, Mr. Hoffman probably voted for the fake workers comp reform in ‘11 and the fake budget last May.

    Who owns IL’s current mess, the majority party!

  16. Sandack is The Owl. Can’t “in-who” a who.

    If you root for the hostage taker, you’re not concerned with the “governin’…”

  17. I liked it better when Blagojevich’s handmaiden, Jay Hoffman, was a pariah.

  18. ==Who owns IL’s current mess, the majority party!==

    There’s plenty of blame to go around. Anybody that tries to blame any particular party is nothing but a partisan hack.
