This is what you’d call a “tell”

Posted in:

* The Tribune editorial page has often been called the “Winnetka Talking To Wilmette” section of the newspaper. Check out today’s editorial about how the Art Institute was just rated the top museum in the world by TripAdvisor

Now, let’s ask a potentially embarrassing question: Have you spent more time in museums in Paris or New York than you have in your hometown?

Yep, I don’t see those folks pushing a minimum wage hike any time soon.

* The full TripAdvisor list is here, by the way. Also, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum was rated 19th best in the US of A.

  4. @OneMan:

That is what we always called WTTW where so many of the talking heads pontificating about urban affairs and Chicago politics were all living safe and secure lives in New Trier Township.

  5. Yep, I don’t see those folks pushing a minimum wage hike any time soon.

I don’t agree. The wealthiest people in the world are Democrats and support it. The largest political donors are Democrats and support it. The biggest most expensive campaigns right now are Democrats, and they support it. As of this week, Democrats have spent $25,000,000 more that Republicans on the Midterms. All this money is coming from people who have it, and support raising the minimum wage in order to get an edge on these elections they are pouring their riches into.

As to spending time in Illinois museums, these are fantastic places for fund raisers and a lot of these wealthy people do spend time in them. While they may not be looking at mummies or at a Van Gogh, they are doing more than their fair share in them.

When I am in NYC or Paris, I am often seeing the amazing and fantastic museums, but I am not doing any fund raising there. I do that locally.

  6. This is why they call us “The Windy City.”

There are two competing visions of Chicago.

The working class City of Big Shoulders and the one that traded barbs with NYC over who should host the Columbian Exposition.

When Chicago is at its best, it is the greatest city certainly in North America.

The rest of the time, we’re the home of the Cubs.

And they might have a small point: I grew up right across the River but have never been up the St. Louis Arch.

But no, not Paris or NYC. Let us pretend for one brief shining moment that we all someday will.

    Okay, back to work.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 2:28 pm

  7. Once again the Tribune doesn’t let reality get in the way of ideology. The Art Institute is one reason Chicago is a world class city. Consider other Midwestern cities … no comparison.

Comment by Sir Reel Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 2:31 pm

  8. To your point, Sir Reel, as much as the Tribune might try to drag Illinois down:

Dallas or Houston will never bee world class cities. No one would even put them on a long list.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 2:33 pm

  9. “The wealthiest people in the world are Democrats and support it.”

Six of the ten richest people in the country have just two last names: Walton (Wal-mart) and Koch.

Those people are not and have never been Democrats. Those people actively oppose a higher minimum wage.

  12. If you’re on the Tribbie edit board and claim to have spent more time at museums in New York or Paris than the Art Institute just down the street, I have just one question:

Which museum has the best fries? Because you’re really not into the art.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 2:40 pm

  13. VanillaMan,

No research I’m aware of supports that contention that “the wealthiest people in the world are Democrats.”

There is precious little research to be sure, because we don’t have great data sets on the wealthiest people. Here I am going to argue that an exit poll that lumps together everyone earning over 200K is not getting close to capturing the “really rich.” The best survey I’m aware of is Page Bartels and Seawright (2013), which has the added utility here that it was conducted exclusively in IL around Chicagoland. In their laboriously constructed survey of a sampling of Chicagoland’s ultra wealthy, they found a rough partisan breakdown of 58% Republican, 27% Democrat. And as you move from merely wealthy (say 5 million) to ultra wealthy (40 million) their data suggests you get less friendly to govt regulation, Social Security and income taxation.

The Democratic liberal angels are definitely out there. But those anecdotal exceptions shouldn’t blur that the conventional wisdom seems supported : the ultra rich are on net a Republican and libertarian leaning bunch.

  21. I was trying to piece together an appropriate response to the Trib’s editorial, but a dear friend just wandered in and I had to stop to regale him with memories of Florence. You know, I do a lot of regaling. It is just who I am.

We then went on to discuss how charter schools and lower corporate taxes will solve all of our problems.

So, let me get back to this when I can find a moment.

  23. I doubt the Tribsters meant to call theirs a “potentially embarrassing question” in the way that it actually IS a potentially embarrassing question.

I never have to page all the way to the Trib’s funny papers for my daily guffaw - just to the end of Section 1.

Comment by Linus Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 3:10 pm

  24. “Who’s been to the Packer Hall of Fame?”

I have, and I’ve never forgiven my parents for their terrible judgment in that regard.

Now some might say, in defense of my parents, “But what else is there to do in Green Bay?”

Well, those people fail to ask “What kind of person believes Green Bay is a reasonable choice for a vacation?”

  27. In direct response to the Trib’s comment — as Wordslinger noted, if you’ve been to art museums more often in NY or Paris than in Chicago, you don’t really care about art.

For people who live here, the museums are a huge asset. On weekends when the weather is cold and/or rainy, I take my kids to one of them.

My kids learned to read in part by reading the information at the dinosaur exhibit at the Field. The Field, MSI, and Shedd have kept us entertained on countless Saturday mornings.

If people — particularly those with kids — are not going a few times a year, you are really missing something.

  30. I probably HAVE spent more time in museums in Paris than in Chicago, but that’s probably just because during my one and only trip to Paris, it rained the whole freaking week and derailed the plans for a bunch of outdoor activities. Spent LOTS of time in LOTS of museums over there.

And I agree with Linus; it IS an embarrassing question - for the Trib, that is.

  31. I always advise young parents to get family passes for the Art Institute, Museum of Science and Industry and Brookfield Zoo.

Outstanding value if you use them year-roudn and some of the best memories of your life to boot.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 4:02 pm

  32. Following up on Word’s comment –

One benefit of a membership is that you don’t feel compelled to spend a full day at a place. With a membership, you can go for two or three hours, and not feel you overpaid.

The choice of places depends on the age of the kids. When my kids were younger, MSI was the best. It has a lot of hands on stuff, and parking is indoors. We also did the Shedd, but that more because my kids liked sharks and because we could sit in the “basement” and have lunch and watch the dolphins. Those two activities alone made a trip there worthwhile.

The kids are in a dinosaur phase now, so the choice tends to be the Field.

We haven’t spend as much time in the AI yet. My kids are still a bit too young to really connect with the stuff, and other than an educational area in the northeast corner, nothing is hands on.

If it’s a rainy day in Door County, GB is an hour away. And there’s nothing better than to sit in Curly’s Pub with blue and orange on.

  34. – nothing is hands on.–

Yeah, well, not everyone gets the memo….

Let’s just say, don’t turn your head for long, or some four-year-old might be sitting in the lap of a 1,400-year-old Tang Dynasty Buddha.

But we’ll keep that on the down low….

  35. Been to 11 of the 25 so far and hope to go to all of these places. We should be very proud of our ALL of our local museums and cultural institutions. BTW, Wilmette has a great History Museum and the Lincoln Museum in Springfield is absolutely not to be missed.

  36. @Vanilla Man — I thought the “Yep, I don’t see those folks pushing a minimum wage hike any time soon.” comment was directed at the Tribune editorial board. I didn’t see an attempt to pigeon-hole.

The Trib’s board position on the min wage: “Raising the minimum wage may be good politics, but it’s risky in the delicate economic climate of Illinois….”

The Trib board would rather have low wage employers get gov’t subsidies to boost their low wage workers via aid & make those workers sign up and beg than support a wage increase — or even an increase that would bring the minimum wage back in line even to what it is a few decades ago.
