Question of the day

Monday, Oct 2, 2006

I got busy and forgot about posting a question today. Oops.

Have you received any direct mail from a political campaign in the last week or so? If you have, describe the piece(s) and rate their effectiveness.

  1. - VanillaMan - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 9:43 am:

No. It must be because we are so gerrymandered, no one knows who our candidates are.

  2. - Truthful James - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 9:50 am:

Yes - -about twenty, color, hard shiny stock, many races, useless.

  3. - anon - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 9:51 am:

In the Springfield area, nothing. Not even a lot of yard signs.

  4. - Wumpus - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:00 am:

Roskam, I can’t really remember what it looked like, since I didn’t pay it much attention. I will vote for him. I did get a survey call frm venture data. It was asking me a little about Gov, Bush, and then congress. They asked me am I voting for Roskam or Duckie, (Roskam), then would I still vote for him if I was told he’d be a rubber stamp for Bush like he was for RYan. They asked where did I get my info/news on candidates, etc.

  5. - Little Egypt - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:30 am:

Not one single piece of mail - and it’s been wonderful.

  6. - The Picolo Player is a... - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:35 am:

Tony Peraica sent me spam online. Ugh.

  7. - RBD - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:39 am:

Peraica street signs and bumper stickers are popping up in the Near North area of Chicago.

  8. - EC - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:42 am:

Haring and Boland pieces have been arriving in the 71st state rep district.

I received what I thought it was a breast cancer awareness mailer. I didn’t open it, just threw it away. Found out later it was from Boland. His name was no where on the front or back of the mailer. I didn’t even open it or I guess I would have seen that it was a political piece. I would give it a big fat zero.

The second piece I received from Boland was attractive and colorful on the one side, showing children from different parts of the world. Again, no mention of his name anywhere. I went to throw it away (thought it was a different kind of junk) but I turned it over as I threw it away and saw that it was a political mailer from Boland. I did read it after that. It was about insurance for Illinois children.

I thought Haring’s was very clean and precise about who it was from, that he is running for the office, etc. He didn’t use breast cancer or sick children with no insurance as his hook.

  9. - steve schnorf - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:46 am:

    No

  10. - decatur boy - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:55 am:

a real thing piece from Bob Flider making himself to be icon like the Beatles. Sorry Bob,not.
You have lost that status with the Madigan attack campaign against little Scot England. Now, you are crying foul at Cain. Were you not a lobbyist for Illinois Power? Were you not a govt. affairs person for Ameron until December of 2005. Did you lobby for the auction concept?
Then there is the pension stuff.
We love you Bob but boy have you become one of them. I holding my nose and voting again for you but you are not the real deal.

  11. - Louis G. Atsaves - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 11:03 am:

Nothing so far. It has been very quiet. But my neighbors to the North in the 8th Congressional District are being bombarded by Bean/McSweeney pieces.

    Louis G. Atsaves

  12. - big al - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 11:15 am:

mysteriously quiet, which is great for voter turnout and enthusiasm. i guess there’s no love affair for Dem operatives with Senior Blago

  13. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 11:37 am:

I’ve gotten a few from Pavich. Some postive on him, the rest talking about Weller’s voting record. They looked pretty well done. Weller has sent two out, mostly saying Pavich will raise taxes…

  14. - Bottom Line - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 11:46 am:

I got one from Topinka and it was really good and she looks good too.

  15. - B Hicks - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 12:21 pm:

    Yeah, she’s a real beauty.

  16. - Anon - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 12:39 pm:

My wife and I received a card from the “Executive Mansion” congradulating us on the birth of our son. It encourages us to immunize him by two months, and is signed by the Governor.

My son was born fourteen months ago.

  17. - kdruben - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 12:49 pm:

    I received two this weekend…

One from Bean’s campaign which had a picture of David McSweeney with a smoke stack on it with his face fading away in the smoke. Inside it had the same information which had been used in all of her past pieces… His stance on abortion, his stance on embryonic stem cells, his stance on drilling in Lake Michigan and his efforts to weaken environmental standards. This is the seventh in the last week with all of the same things…

I got another one from Tim Schneider… something about “will not raise taxes, will be there for you, will need your vote.” Very stupid, I thought.

  18. - Marie - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 12:50 pm:

    No mail. Yes!

But we had someone bring brochures for the Dem statewide candidates late Saturday morning.

  19. - ninja - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 12:51 pm:

I too received a nice Hallmark card from the Governor congratulating my wife and me on the birth of our son who was born in July….of ‘05

  20. - CrunchyCon - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 12:52 pm:

In the last week, our parish nurse put up 2 posters for I-SaveRx and AllKids on the church bulletin board. The governor’s name and office is across the bottom of both posters, near the information cards. The timing of these campaign, I mean promotional materials in uncanny.

  21. - cermak_rd - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 1:00 pm:

Nothing. It’s as if the political mail fairy has gone on strike here on the West Side.

  22. - Ashur Odishoo - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 1:22 pm:

My friend showed me a “legislative” mailing that Ken Dunkin sent out. It was paid for by state taxes. I thought this was illegal.

His name was HUGE across the top. This sort of stuff really needs to be cleaned up.

    Ashur Odishoo
    Candidate
    State Representative 11th District

  23. - Wumpus - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 1:33 pm:

Ninja, same here, except a daughter was born in July 05. My wife picked it up and said this is nice, but just over a year too late. Hopefully, she didn’t throw it away, since I didn’t have time to look at it. RE; the timing, I thought Blago finally paid the postage bill.

  24. - So-Called "Austin Mayor" - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 1:38 pm:

I’ve only receive one in the last week — a cardstock mailer from the Duckworth campaign featuring a large photo of an Addison man (Republican?) who had retired from the military and was expressing his anger at the misrepresentation of the John McCain/Tammy Duckworth position on immigration reform.

The clear focus of the piece was to tie Maj. Duckworth to Sen. McCain. That seems to build on the previous Bob Dole non-endorsement endorsement, i.e. Tammy Duckworth is the kind of Democrat that moderate independents and Republicans with military service can respect and support.

And the only way for her to pull this off will be to win nearly every McCain-style Republican vote. She needs all of the moderates — maybe even those slightly center-right — and everyone to their left to come out for her in November.

The campaign has cast the right net, the question is whether they can keep any of the voters they need from slipping away.

  25. - Squideshi - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 2:05 pm:

No. I requested a nonpartisan ballot at the last primary election, so they’re not interested in me.

  26. - Bridget Dooley - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 2:23 pm:

Nope, I haven’t received anything in several weeks. I’ve seen a lot of TV ads and seen many, many Peraica signs in Chicago where I work.

  27. - anon - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 3:18 pm:

I have seen a few Eric Wallace signs in the South Suburbs.

  28. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 4:08 pm:

In Rock Island county NO ONE is using the word FOR on their signs. This has caused a lot of talk up here:

Steve Haring - 71st District State Representative

He has never been elected State Rep.

But then Rep. Boland’s signs have nothing about being State Rep on them They all say
    FOR ILLINOIS
like he’s not sure what he’s running for this time.

  29. - zatoichi - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 5:08 pm:

Got some stuff at home. Never bother to read it. Circular filed immediately wth other junk mail.

  30. - yeh - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 6:21 pm:

More Flider junk mail. Good fire starting stuff for cooking hot dogs over the open fire this fall.

  31. - Go Cain - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 7:27 pm:

Love the Cain ad making Flider look like a Blago clone. Flider is going to hurt by the image that he is controlled by Chicago politicans like Blago and Madigan.

  32. - Martha Mitchell - Monday, Oct 2, 06 @ 10:22 pm:

The reason there seems to be a dirth of campaign literature this time is that the governor’s crap is targeting specific populations; seniors, people with children and no insurance, undocumented workers and on and on. His name is in the largest font on the pages and he sends multiple items to the same households. My granddaughter came home with All Kids crap from school. Oval-filed it.

  33. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Oct 3, 06 @ 9:14 am:

Okay, I went home and dug up the birth piece. It is something congratulating us on the birth of a new daughter. It has form for immunization records and warns us to get immunizations by 2 months. It also has a slip insert to talk about the new law on public breastfeeding signed by Patti Blagojavich. The kicker is my daughter is closer to 15 months and as my wife said, who wants to breast feed someone with 8 teeth?

I also got something from Cook COunty COmmisioner candidate Tim Schneider. stating No more corruption, etc, so on and so forth.

  34. - Taxpayer #1 - Tuesday, Oct 3, 06 @ 11:50 am:

Anon, Ninja and Wumpus - Did any of you get a $1500 check from the Guv for the birth of your child, kids christening, kids baptism, kids college fund, pre-k fund, karate class, tap/ballet classes or what ever you want to call it? Whoops, I forgot you don’t have any job openings?
